Chapter 22 - The Shadow on the Staircase

The metallic clash of steel against brass reverberated through the study, a violent chord that cut through the silence of the stormy night. Julian stumbled back a half-step, surprise flashing across his weathered face as he stared at the letter opener embedded deep into the wood of the desk, just an inch from where my hand had been.
"You've grown teeth, Margaret," Julian muttered, his eyes narrowing to cold, predatory slits as he recovered his balance and adjusted his grip on the improvised blade. "Too bad teeth can't stop an eviction."
Before he could lunge again, a soft, frightened click echoed from the dark hallway behind him—the sound of bare feet stepping onto the polished hardwood floor. My blood ran ice-cold.
"Mom?"
Sophie's small, trembling voice cut through the air like a knife. She was standing in the doorway, wearing her oversized yellow pajamas, her blonde hair sleep-tossed and tangled. Her wide, terrified eyes fixed instantly on the tall, menacing stranger standing between us with a weapon in his hand.
"Go back to bed, Sophie!" I screamed, my voice cracking with a primal panic that ripped the air from my lungs. "Run upstairs to Everett right now!"
Julian’s head snapped around toward the doorway, a cruel, calculating smile spreading slowly across his face. "Well, well. If it isn't the birthday girl. I brought a present, little one. A reminder of all the things your mother owes us."
He pivoted on his heel, turning his back to me as he took a slow, heavy step toward my daughter. Every maternal instinct I possessed surged forward, drowning out fear, reason, and self-preservation. I didn't think; I moved. I grabbed the heavy brass inkwell from the corner of the desk and hurled it with every ounce of strength in my body, aiming squarely for the back of Julian's head.
The heavy container caught him right between the shoulder blades with a dull, sickening thud. Julian grunted, stumbling forward and crashing hard against the mahogany bookshelf, sending a cascade of antique law books crashing down around his boots.
"Sophie, run!" I yelled again, vaulting over the edge of the desk.
Sophie didn't hesitate. She turned and bolted up the grand staircase with the speed of a startled fawn, her bare feet slapping frantically against the wooden steps.
Julian scrambled to his feet, cursing furiously, blood dripping from a small cut on his cheek where a flying shard of wood had grazed him. He lunged toward the hallway, his face twisted in a mask of pure rage. "You stupid bitch! You think you can play games with me?"
May you like
I threw myself into his path, tackling him squarely around the waist just as he reached the foot of the stairs. The impact knocked the wind out of both of us, sending us crashing onto the parquet floor. Julian cursed and swung his elbow back, catching me hard in the ribs. Pain exploded across my chest, white-hot and blinding, but I locked my arms around his legs, anchoring him to the floor with the stubborn desperation of a mother defending her cub.
"Everett!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, the sound tearing my vocal cords as Julian raised the brass-handled key, ready to bring it down on my shoulder. "Everett, get down here!"
