Chapter 28 - The Firewall Falls

The moment my finger pressed the enter key, the small ledger in my hands let out a sharp, high-pitched whine. The pulsing green text on the screen dissolved into a cascading waterfall of red binary code that raced down the micro-display like blood pouring down a glass pane.

Outside, the New England storm seemed to pause for a fraction of a second, the heavy patter of the drizzle abruptly silencing itself before a low, distant rumble of thunder rolled across the Cambridge rooftops.

*FIREWALL BREACHED,* the screen flashed in bold, glaring letters.

*EXECUTING ROOT-LEVEL PURGE ACROSS NODES 1 THROUGH 12.*

"It's working," I breathed out, a wave of dizziness washing over me as the sheer magnitude of what I had just done settled into my bones. For thirty years, my father’s ghost had ruled my life, dictating my fears, shadowing my steps, and threatening my daughter’s future. In a matter of seconds, I was burning his digital legacy down to ash—just like I had burned the paper ledgers in the warehouse on State Street.

Suddenly, the screen flickered violently, turning a blinding, stark white. A new prompt appeared, flashing a single line of text that made my heart stop:

*WARNING: EXTERNAL OVERRIDE ATTEMPT DETECTED FROM IP ADDRESS 127.0.4.9.*

*JULIAN VANCE IS ACCESSING THE MASTER BACKUP.*

"He's riding our coattails," Everett said, leaning over my shoulder, his eyes darting across the screen. "He's trying to siphon the remaining funds into his own personal account before the purge completes."

"Not on my watch," I snarled, a fierce, protective fury surging through my veins.

I didn't hesitate. I slammed my hand onto the emergency isolation key—a physical toggle switch hidden beneath the ledger's binding that my father had installed to lock down the system in case of an internal coup.

*ISOLATION PROTOCOL ENGAGED.*

*SEVERING EXTERNAL CONNECTIONS.*

The blinding white light on the screen snapped to a deep, absolute black. For five agonizing seconds, the room was dead silent. Even the grandfather clock in the hall seemed to hold its breath.

Then, a soft, chime-like bell rang out from the ledger.

*PURGE COMPLETE. ALL HARLAN ESTATE ASSETS TRANSFERRED TO THE MASSACHUSETTS VICTIM RESTITUTION FUND.*

*SYSTEM TERMINATED PERMANENTLY.*

The micro-screen went completely dark, the lithium-ion circuit board sparking once before dying out in a faint wisp of harmless smoke. The ledger in my hands was now nothing more than an ordinary, lifeless block of leather and dead metal.

Everett let out a long, shuddering breath, sagging back against the edge of the desk as the adrenaline drained from his body. He looked at me, a profound, overwhelming pride shining in his eyes.

"You did it, Margaret," he whispered, reaching out to cup my cheek with his warm hand. "It's really over."

May you like

Before I could answer, a loud, urgent pounding echoed from the front porch. Not the stealthy, skeleton-key turn of midnight trespassers, but the heavy, authoritative thumping of official fists against the oak door, accompanied by the flashing red and blue lights of Cambridge police cruisers painting the study windows in alternating stripes of color.

"Open up! Cambridge Police Department!" a voice boomed through the stormy night. "We received an automated fraud alert and distress signal from this address!"
