Chapter 27 - The Countdown on the Screen

The glowing green text on the ledger's micro-screen illuminated the dark study with a harsh, clinical light. Below our home address, the digital countdown timer ticked down relentlessly: *04:58:45... 04:58:44...*

"Four hours," Everett said, leaning in close as he read the data streaming across the display. "If that timer hits zero, the legal ownership of this house and every cent in our recovery fund automatically routes to an offshore shell corporation controlled by Julian Vance and his associates."

"Not if we wipe the server first," I said, my fingers flying across the tiny built-in keyboard, navigating through the nested directories of my father's digital empire. "My father was arrogant. He built this system to mirror his physical vaults. Every offshore account is tied to a central master node located right here in Massachusetts—at the old Worcester Academy administrative building."

Sophie watched us quietly from the sofa, her small hand clutching her stuffed rabbit. "Are we going to have to move again, Daddy? Is the bad man going to take our house?"

Everett turned, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her into a warm, protective embrace. "No, sweetheart. We're not going anywhere. Your mom and I are going to fix this right now. You just close your eyes and get some rest. By the time the sun comes up, this whole bad dream will be over."

Sophie nodded sleepily, her eyelids fluttering closed as the adrenaline of the midnight intrusion finally gave way to sheer exhaustion. Within minutes, her breathing deepened into the steady, untroubled rhythm of a child fast asleep.

Everett gently laid her down on the sofa, covering her with a cashmere throw blanket before turning back to the desk. His face was a mask of cold, unwavering resolve.

"What do you need me to do, Margaret?" he asked, his voice low and steady.

"I need you to help me execute a total system purge," I said, pointing to a flashing red icon at the bottom of the ledger screen. "This isn't just about deleting our foreclosure notice. If I execute a root-level override using my father's master administrator profile—which only I can unlock with the twenty-ninth strike sequence—it will trigger a cascade deletion across every linked server in the state. It will wipe out the Harlan Estate Trust entirely."

"Will it leave a trace?" Everett asked. "Something they can trace back to us?"

"It will leave a crater," I replied grimly. "Every illegal asset, every fraudulent claim, every stolen inheritance my father ever hoarded will be permanently erased from the state registry. But it will also trigger a federal alert with the SEC and the Massachusetts Attorney General's office, because all those hidden funds will automatically revert to the public restitution fund for victims of financial fraud."

Everett let out a slow, grim smile. "Let the SEC come. We have nothing to hide. Let the state audit every brick in this house. We earned it legally through the court settlement."

"Then let's do it," I said.

I placed my thumb on the biometric scanner beside the screen—a final security measure my father had installed just in case someone ever bypassed the numeric code. The scanner glowed red, reading my fingerprint against the stored genetic data of the Harlan bloodline.

*BIOMETRIC MATCH CONFIRMED: MARGARET HARLAN.*

*PREPARE FOR ROOT OVERRIDE.*

The countdown timer on the screen suddenly accelerated: *00:02:15... 00:02:14...*

"Hold on," Everett whispered, gripping the edge of the mahogany desk.

I hit the enter key just as the countdown hit zero.
