Chapter 12 - Shadows in the Boardroom

While the sun shone brightly over the Everhart estate, the atmosphere inside a high-rise law office in downtown Seattle was decidedly glacial. The carpeted conference room smelled of stale coffee and expensive paper, and the air conditioning hummed with a low, monotonous drone that did nothing to cool the rising panic inside the room. Seated at the head of a massive glass-and-steel table was Jonathan Vance—no relation to Nathaniel’s chief legal counsel, but rather the senior managing partner of Vance, Sterling & Cole, the legal powerhouse that had represented Everhart Vector during Lucas's reckless expansion phase.

Jonathan was a man who prided himself on never losing a case, yet here he was, staring at a thick dossier of federal subpoenas and internal audit reports that looked less like a legal defense brief and more like an unmitigated disaster. Across the table sat Lucas Everhart. The disgraced CEO looked a decade older than he had a week ago. His tailored suit hung loosely on his frame, his hair was uncombed, and the arrogant, polished veneer that had defined his public persona had been entirely replaced by a hollow, hunted desperation.

"I don't understand," Lucas muttered, his voice cracking as he shoved a stack of financial statements across the table. "We structured those charity routing transfers through the exact same offshore shell entities we’ve used for three years. How did Nathaniel's audit team flag them within forty-eight hours? It’s mathematically impossible unless someone inside my inner circle handed them the encryption keys."

Jonathan let out a sharp, exhausted sigh, rubbing his temples with two manicured fingers. "Lucas, you still don't get it, do you?" The lawyer slammed his pen onto the glass surface. "You weren't outsmarted by a routine internal audit. You were targeted by a masterclass in forensic accounting executed by a woman who chose to walk into your gala wearing a service jacket because she wanted to observe your operation from the ground level. And your genius girlfriend decided to rip her dress and call her trash."

Lucas flinched as if he had been physically struck. The memory of that night—the sound of silk tearing, the terrifying stillness in Claire's gray eyes, and finally the calm, earth-shattering entrance of Nathaniel Everhart—played on an endless loop in his mind. "She’s just a woman Nathaniel married quietly," Lucas whispered defensively, though the words sounded hollow even to his own ears. "She wasn't even listed on the public registry as an executive at Everhart Global."

"She doesn't need a public title to wield power, Lucas," Jonathan said grimly, leaning forward and resting his forearms on the table. "Claire Everhart is the primary private trustee for the family's foundational endowments. When you touch her, you don't just anger a billionaire patriarch; you wake up an entire economic ecosystem that has governed the Pacific Northwest for over a century. Our firm cannot represent you anymore. The conflict of interest is insurmountable, and quite frankly, our senior partners aren't willing to go down with a sinking ship that you sailed directly into an iceberg."

Lucas stared at him in horror. "You're dropping me? Right before the federal arraignment?"

"We're filing our formal motion to withdraw counsel by noon," Jonathan replied coldly, gathering his papers and sliding them into a leather briefcase. "My advice to you, Lucas, is to plead guilty to the wire fraud charges, cooperate with the Department of Justice, and hope that Nathaniel’s legal team is feeling merciful when the sentencing guidelines are handed down. Because if you try to fight this in court, you aren't just fighting the federal government—you're fighting a man who owns the very soil this courthouse is built on."

With a sharp click of his briefcase latches, Jonathan stood up, turned his back on his former client, and walked out of the conference room, leaving Lucas alone in the silent, sterile gloom. The smart-home display on the wall flickered with a news alert about Everhart Global’s massive new green energy initiative—an acquisition of his own former company, rebranded and integrated into an empire he could no longer touch. Lucas buried his face in his hands, the terrifying reality finally sinking in: he was completely, irrevocably erased.
