Chapter 7 - The Weight of a Secret

The penthouse at the Cascade Crown was no longer a symbol of triumph for Lucas Everhart; it was a cage of glass and isolation. The panoramic windows offered a sweeping view of Seattle, but the gray drizzle outside mirrored the heavy gloom inside the sprawling living room. Empty whiskey bottles littered the designer coffee table, and the smart-home display blinked with unanswered calls from jittery investors, panicked lenders, and nervous PR agents who had abandoned ship the moment the board vote leaked. Lucas paced the hardwood floor, his shoes clicking rhythmically in the empty space, his mind racing through a maze of dead ends. He had spent his entire adult life living in the shadow of the main Everhart branch, carving out Everhart Vector through ruthless ambition and financial acrobatics that danced along the razor's edge of legality. He had convinced himself that his cousin Nathaniel was an untouchable titan simply because he had inherited the crown, while Lucas had to fight for every scrap. And now, in less than a day, it had all evaporated because of a single moment of arrogant cruelty from Madison. The elevator chime echoed through the penthouse—a sharp, unexpected sound that made Lucas halt in his tracks. The private foyer doors slid open, and Madison stepped inside, looking pale and desperate. Her designer coat was wrinkled, her hair unstyled, the picture of high-society perfection utterly shattered. "Lucas," she breathed, her voice trembling. "We have to do something. My father's lawyers are useless, and my friends won't even answer my calls. Everyone is pretending we don't exist." Lucas stared at her, a bitter, humorless laugh escaping his lips. "Do something?" he repeated, his voice dangerously low. "With what, Madison? You spent months treating everyone around you like garbage because you thought my last name gave us immunity. And then you decided to tear a dress off a waitress in front of four hundred witnesses." "I didn't know!" she screamed back, the desperate hysteria finally breaking through her composed veneer. "Nobody told me he was married! How was I supposed to know Nathaniel Everhart kept a wife hidden away like a dirty secret?" "She wasn't a secret; she was invisible to people like you!" Lucas roared, slamming his fist against the marble kitchen island. The impact rattled the glassware. "Because people like you only look at titles and bank accounts! She was investigating my company for weeks while you were busy buying $10,000 handbags! She didn't need to scream or threaten us—she just watched us destroy ourselves!" Madison shrank back, tears spilling over her mascara-stained lashes. For the first time in her life, she had no counter-argument. She had no powerful father to bail her out, no social circle to validate her cruelty. The door behind her opened further, and a quiet, heavy presence filled the room. Lucas froze. Standing in the private elevator lobby, flanked by two security operatives in sharp charcoal suits, was Nathaniel Everhart.
