Chapter 16 - The Last Defenses of Mercer Island

The morning fog rolled lazily over Lake Washington, shrouding the grand waterfront estates of Mercer Island in a blanket of grey mist. Inside the sprawling Mercer Island manor that had once belonged to Grant Vale—and was now subject to an emergency federal asset preservation order—the atmosphere was suffocating. The smart-home heating had been dialed down to conserve power, and the smart refrigerators were largely empty, save for a few half-spoiled condiments and bottled water. The digital assistants on the walls had been disabled by court-appointed trustees, leaving the once-state-of-the-art mansion feeling like a cold, echoing tomb.

Grant Vale sat at a massive mahogany dining table that was entirely bare of paperwork, his fingers trembling slightly as he stared into a cold cup of instant coffee. Across from him sat his daughter, Madison, her hair unwashed and pulled back into a messy clip, wearing an oversized grey hoodie that completely swallowed her frame. The contrast between this miserable morning and the dazzling heights of the Cascade Crown Hotel gala was so absolute that it felt like a lifetime had passed, though barely three weeks had gone by.

"The federal prosecutor’s office just updated the asset forfeiture schedule," Grant muttered, his voice cracked and hollow. He didn't look up from his coffee mug. "They’re seizing the primary accounts in the Cayman Islands. They’ve frozen the secondary trust funds. Even the penthouse in Manhattan has been placed under receivership. By Friday, the court will formally dissolve Vale Broadcast Group, and whatever shares we had left will be liquidated at auction to satisfy the federal tax liens and victim restitution funds."

Madison let out a dry, humorless laugh that sounded like breaking glass. "And who do you think is first in line to buy the corporate assets at auction, Dad? Everhart Global. Nathaniel Everhart is probably sitting in his glass office right now, watching our entire family history get chopped up into discount packages for his subsidiary tech firms."

"We brought this on ourselves," Grant said quietly, the bitter pill of reality finally forcing its way down his throat. "You couldn't resist humiliating a waitress just to feed your own ego, and I was too arrogant to look past our balance sheets to see what kind of empire Claire and Nathaniel were building behind our backs. We didn't just lose our money, Madison. We lost our standing. We lost our existence."

Madison buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with silent, bitter tears. There were no brand managers to call, no high-society friends answering her texts, and no escape from the relentless, grinding machinery of justice that Claire Bennett—now universally recognized as the true queen of Seattle—had set into motion. Outside the tall leaded glass windows, a sleek black town car bearing the understated crest of Everhart Global slowed briefly on the perimeter road, its tinted windows reflecting the cold grey sky before gliding silently away—a quiet, chilling reminder that they were being watched, managed, and completely forgotten.
