Chapter 10 - The Fall of the Golden Child

By mid-March, the pressure inside the Littleton house had cooked into a volatile toxic stew.

Without Claire’s silent financial safety net, the reality of life hit Megan with the force of a high-speed collision. The local bank denied her application for a car loan refinancing because her credit score had plummeted to 520. Kyle’s night shifts at the warehouse paid minimum wage—barely enough to cover diapers, toddler formula, and the interest payments on their compounding credit card balances.

Worse still was the social death.

In the modern age of digital hyper-visibility, Megan’s vanished high-rise era became a running joke among her former circle. High school peers sent snide direct messages: “Hey Megan! Did you guys move out of Cherry Creek already? Saw Kyle working the night register at Home Depot!”

Humiliated, broke, and trapped in her parents' damp, unfinished basement, Megan snapped.

It happened on a rainy Thursday night. Evelyn had prepared a budget meal of boiled pasta and canned tomato sauce—a far cry from the roasted meats and imported cheeses Claire used to buy for holiday dinners.

"I can't eat this," Kyle grumbled, pushing his plate away. "My back hurts from throwing pallets all night, and I come home to prison food?"

Robert snapped his fork down onto the table. "You'll eat whatever is put in front of you, you lazy parasite! You haven't contributed a single dollar toward electric or gas since you moved your trash into my garage!"

"Don't talk to my husband like that!" Megan screamed, standing up so fast her chair fell backward with a loud crash. "This is your fault! You told us Claire would give us the condo! You promised me! You made me look like an idiot on Facebook!"

"We promised you?!" Evelyn shrieked, her voice reaching a dog-whistle pitch. "We gave you everything, Megan! We paid for your cars! We paid for your wedding! We paid off your credit cards three times! We tried to give you Claire's house because we spent thirty years spoiling you, and you turned out completely useless!"

"Useless?!" Megan sobbed wildly. "You loved Claire more! You always liked her because she had money!"

"We didn't love her for her money!" Robert roared, his eyes wide and bloodshot. "We took her for granted! We treated the only child who actually built a life like a piece of dirt under our shoes to feed your endless greed! And now she’s gone, and we’re stuck paying for your children while I should be retiring!"

Kyle stood up, towering over Robert. "You talk to my wife like that again, old man, and we're packing up!"

"Then pack up!" Robert screamed, pointing a shaky finger at the front door. "Get out of my house! Take your boxes, take your kids, and get out!"

Megan gasped, looking at her mother for help. But Evelyn didn't step in. Evelyn sat staring at her cold pasta, her shoulders slouched, weeping silently into her napkin. The shield was gone. The golden child was finally being asked to pay the bill.
