Chapter 12 - A Knock in the Dark

It was a muggy Tuesday evening in late September when the past finally caught up to Claire’s front

door—not through a phone call or an email, but in the flesh.

Claire was returning to her Austin apartment building after an evening run along the river. As she stepped out of the air-conditioned elevator onto the twentieth floor, she froze.

Sitting on the hallway carpet outside Unit 2004 was a figure wrapped in a faded denim jacket, clutching a cheap vinyl handbag.

It was Megan.

Claire’s heart gave a single, hard thud against her ribs before her internal operating system instantly flattened her expression into stone. She didn't panic. She didn't step backward. She walked forward with slow, deliberate steps until her shadow fell over her younger sister.

Megan looked up. The contrast between them was devastating.

Claire stood tall, radiating health, power, and wealth—dressed in high-end athletic wear, her hair tied back seamlessly, her skin glowing. Megan looked hollowed out, her cheeks sunken, black circles dark beneath her eyes, her roots grown out six inches of dirty brown.

"Claire..." Megan rasped, her voice trembling as she struggled to stand up on shaky legs. "Oh my God... Claire... I found you."

Claire didn't move to embrace her. She didn't reach out a hand. She stood two feet away, her arms crossed.

"How did you get into this building, Megan?" Claire asked, her tone flat and cold as dry ice.

"I... I followed a resident through the lobby gate," Megan stammered, tears instantly welling up in her eyes. "I hired a private investigator, Claire! It took me three months to save up twelve hundred dollars to hire a skip-tracer to track down your company's registration in Texas!"

"You spent twelve hundred dollars on a private investigator?" Claire let out a short, empty laugh. "You couldn't pay your rent, but you spent twelve hundred dollars to hunt me down?"

"I had to!" Megan sobbed, clutching her vinyl bag against her chest. "Everything is falling apart, Claire! Dad had a minor stroke in July! He can't work overtime anymore! Mom is working part-time as a cashier at Target just to pay for his physical therapy! And Kyle... Kyle left me two weeks ago! He packed his guitars, took our last eight hundred dollars, and drove to Nashville with some girl he met on Instagram!"

Megan fell to her knees right there on the carpet of the luxury hallway, weeping hysterically, reaching out to grasp the hem of Claire’s running tights.

"Please, Claire!" Megan begged, her voice echoing down the corridor. "We're going to lose the house in Littleton! The bank sent a notice of default! We need eighty thousand dollars to cure the mortgage arrears! You have the condo money! You have three hundred and fifty thousand dollars! Please, Claire... save our family! Save my babies!"

Claire looked down at her sister.

Six months ago, this scene might have gutted her. Six months ago, the guilt, the conditioned impulse to fix things, the heavy burden of being the "sensible daughter" would have pulled her down into the mud.

But Claire looked at Megan's weeping face and saw only the girl who had clinked wine glasses over pumpkin pie, squealing about turning Claire's walk-in closet into her private studio while planning to push Claire into a noisy studio apartment by a train track.

Claire took one step backward, pulling her clothing out of Megan’s desperate grasp.

"Stand up, Megan," Claire said quietly.
