Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Horizon

Christmas Day, 2026.

The air in Austin, Texas was crisp and bright, seventy degrees under a cloudless turquoise sky.

In a private dining pavilion overlooking the rolling hills of the Texas Hill Country, Claire Vance hosted Christmas dinner for twelve people. The guests were her senior colleagues, close personal friends she had made in Austin, and Julian’s family—warm, grounded people who treated Claire not with hidden motives or transactional demands, but with genuine affection and respect.

The long wooden table was set with white linen, glowing candles, fresh eucalyptus sprigs, and polished silver. Laughter flowed as easily as the wine.

Julian stood at the head of the table, raising his glass.

"To new traditions," Julian said softly, his eyes finding Claire across the table. "To building things that last—on solid ground, with people who lift each other up."

"To new traditions!" the guests toasted, clinking their glasses together.

Claire smiled—a radiant, deep, authentic smile that reached all the way to her dark eyes.

After dinner, as the guests drifted out toward the garden terrace to enjoy the warm evening breeze, Claire walked into the kitchen.

On the marble counter stood a fresh, homemade pumpkin pie, dusted with cinnamon and baked to golden perfection.

She looked at the pie for a quiet moment. She remembered the cold night in Denver one year ago—the freezing air on the balcony, the sound of malicious laughter behind a louvred pantry door, the feeling of utter betrayal that had threatened to consume her soul.

She picked up the pie server, sliced the dessert into clean, perfect portions, and carried it out to the terrace.

She didn't pause at any doors. She didn't freeze. She stepped out into the golden afternoon light, surrounded by people who loved her for who she was, and served the pie under a brilliant, endless horizon.
