Chapter 13 - THE INVISIBLE EYE

The afternoon sky over Chestnut Street had turned a bruised, sullen purple by the time Arthur's unmarked sedan rolled to a stop half a block away from the Martinez family bakery. He didn't turn off the engine immediately. Instead, he sat in the driver's seat, his eyes scanning every shadow, every parked vehicle, and every pedestrian walking along the sidewalk with the hyper-vigilance of a sniper scanning a hostile ridgeline.

Marcus's warning echoed in his mind like a death knell. *If he knows about your bond with that little girl...*

Arthur stepped out of the car, adjusting the collar of his heavy wool coat against the biting wind. The bell above the bakery door chimed cheerfully as he pushed it open, the warm, sweet aroma of cinnamon and baking dough washing over him—a sensory sanctuary that felt entirely out of place given the storm raging inside his chest.

Elena looked up from behind the counter, wiping flour from her hands with a welcoming smile that instantly faltered when she saw the expression carved into Arthur's face.

"General Vance?" she asked, her voice dropping as she stepped closer to the glass partition. "Is everything alright? You look like you've seen a ghost."

"Elena, I need you to listen to me very carefully," Arthur said, keeping his voice low, steady, and urgent. He stepped past the counter, closing the distance between them. "Have you noticed anything unusual around the bakery over the last few days? Anyone asking strange questions, lingering outside, or taking photographs?"

Elena blinked, taken aback by the intensity in his eyes. She shook her head slowly. "No... no, nothing like that. Just the usual customers, parents picking up after-school treats for the kids. Why? What's happened?"

Before Arthur could answer, the front door chimed again. A man in a nondescript gray hoodie walked in, keeping his head down, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. He didn't look at the pastry display. His eyes flicked immediately toward the back staircase—the one leading up to the family's living quarters where Marisol usually did her homework.

Arthur's body reacted before his brain could process the command. Years of combat muscle memory took over in a fraction of a second.

"Elena, get behind the counter. Now," Arthur commanded, his voice carrying the absolute authority of a four-star general ordering a tactical retreat under fire.

The man in the hoodie stopped dead in his tracks, his hand darting toward his pocket. But Arthur was already moving, vaulting over the low end of the pastry counter with surprising agility for a man his age. He hit the floor running, closing the gap between them before the intruder could draw whatever weapon was hidden in his jacket.

With a heavy tackle, Arthur slammed the man against the front window, the glass rattling violently under the impact. Passersby on the sidewalk outside gasped and scattered, stepping away from the glass in sudden panic.

"Who sent you?" Arthur growled, pressing his forearm hard against the man's throat, pinning him securely against the frame. "Who are you working for?"

The man didn't panic. Instead, a cold, mocking smile twisted the corners of his mouth. He didn't try to fight back; he simply reached up with his free hand and tapped a small, blinking black device pinned to the inside collar of his hoodie.

"Message delivered, General," the man rasped, his eyes gleaming with malicious amusement. "The boss says hello."

With a sudden, violent twist, the man dropped his weight, sliding out of his jacket entirely and leaving the heavy fabric in Arthur's grasp. Before Arthur could recover his balance, the intruder bolted out the front door, disappearing into the swirling gray crowds of the evening commute with terrifying speed.

Arthur stood frozen in the middle of the bakery, the empty jacket clutched in his fist. He looked down at the collar. The blinking device was a miniature satellite transmitter—a homing beacon.

They weren't just watching him. They had found Marisol. And the war had officially begun.
