Chapter 21 - THE IRON FORTRESS

The abandoned rail yard loomed out of the mist like the skeletal remains of some ancient, mechanical beast. Rusted freight cars sat stalled on twisted tracks that stretched endlessly into the dark, surrounded by towering brick warehouses whose broken windows stared like blind eyes into the night.
Marcus killed the van’s engine a hundred yards from the main loading dock, letting the vehicle coast silently into the shadows of a towering coal hopper.
"Everyone stay low," Arthur whispered, turning back to check on Elena and Marisol. "Marcus, give me the tactical pad. I want a complete thermal scan of the perimeter before we step foot outside."
Marcus handed over the ruggedized tablet. The screen glowed with a ghostly green light, mapping out the thermal signatures of the sprawling rail yard. For a moment, the screen was completely quiet—just the ambient heat of cooling machinery and the steady patter of the rain against the metal roof.
Then, the northern sector lit up.
"Movement," Arthur muttered, his finger tapping the screen to zoom in on a cluster of five thermal blobs moving in a tactical wedge formation toward the central warehouse. "Blackwood's cleanup crew. They tracked the van's tire treads through the industrial park."
"How did they find us so fast?" Elena asked, her voice trembling as she held Marisol tight. "Are we ever going to be safe?"
"You are safe as long as I'm breathing," Arthur said, his voice carrying an absolute, unshakeable weight that made every doubt vanish from the cramped interior of the van. He looked at Marcus. "Give me your comms headset. I'm going to draw them away from you two."
"General, no—that's suicide," Marcus protested, grabbing Arthur's sleeve. "If you go out there alone against a full squad of Apex operatives—"
"It's not suicide, Marcus. It's tactics," Arthur interrupted, a grim, humorless smile touching the corners of his mouth. "You're going to take Elena and Marisol through the drainage culvert at the back of the property. It leads straight to the river road. There’s a safehouse twenty miles east. Wait for my signal. If you don't hear from me by dawn, you take them across the state line."
May you like
Before Marcus could argue further, Arthur pushed open the van door and stepped out into the freezing downpour, disappearing into the labyrinth of rusted freight cars before a single word could follow him.
