Chapter 5 - The Grand Strategy

Forty-eight hours later, Natalie sat in the private conference room of Callahan & Partners.

Spread out across the massive glass table were printed financial flowcharts, property deeds, and bank transaction logs pulled from the encrypted drive Natalie had stolen.

Mark Callahan was sitting beside his senior forensic investigator, a sharp young woman named Chloe. Opposite them was Rachel.

Mark tapped a red pen against a thick folder.

"This is remarkable, Natalie," Mark said, admiration clear in his voice. "The drive you retrieved contains the blueprints for what Grant and Carter Vance call 'Project Apex'."

"What is Project Apex?" Natalie asked, sipping cold water.

Chloe turned a tablet toward Natalie. "For the past eighteen months, your husband has been systematically siphoning funds from Mercer Global’s domestic accounts into four separate offshore entities in the Cayman Islands and Nevis. He’s been under-reporting company valuation to lower the baseline value of the marital estate."

"How much has he moved?" Rachel asked.

"So far? Approximately forty-seven million dollars," Chloe revealed. "If you had filed for divorce last week under normal circumstances, your prenup would have capped your settlement at six hundred thousand dollars, and his stated domestic net worth would have looked like twenty million. He would have walked away with over a hundred and fifty million hidden off-shore."

Natalie shook her head in disbelief. "And Julianna Vance?"

"Julianna isn't just his mistress," Mark explained. "She is listed as the sole director of Nevis Holdings Inc.—the offshore entity receiving the funds. Grant was planning to execute a quiet corporate divorce from you, wait six months, pay you your miserable prenup payout, and then 'marry' Julianna, effectively transferring the forty-seven million back into his personal accounts without paying you a dime of community property."

"It’s industrial-scale marital fraud," Mark added smoothly. "And because he used corporate assets and wire transfers across state lines to commit this fraud, it shifts this case from a standard family court dispute into federal jurisdiction."

Natalie looked at Mark. "What happens if we expose him now?"

"If we file today," Mark reasoned, "he gets tipped off. His lawyers will move the Cayman accounts into deeper obfuscation layers, and we'll spend five years fighting in international courts to freeze the money. But... if we let him complete the final transaction..."

"The final transaction?" Natalie asked.

"Look at this schedule," Chloe pointed to a calendar entry on the screen. "Next Thursday—exactly six days from now—Grant is finalizing the merger between Mercer Global and the Apex Syndicate at the annual Chicago Developers Gala at the Drake Hotel. During that event, he is scheduled to sign the final wire transfer authorizing thirty million dollars to move into the Nevis account."

Mark leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table.

"If we catch him in the act—if we serve him with a federal freeze order and a divorce petition at that Gala, in front of his board, his investors, and the press, while the wire transfer is in flight... we don't just win a settlement, Natalie. We seize control of the entire corporate portfolio."

Natalie stared at the calendar entry.

Next Thursday.

The anniversary of their fourteenth wedding anniversary was next Thursday.

A cold, sharp smile slowly spread across Natalie’s face.

"Next Thursday is our anniversary," Natalie said quietly. "He told me he was taking me out to dinner to celebrate."

May you like

"Even better," Mark smiled wolfishly. "He won't see it coming. But Natalie... you have to play the role of a lifetime for the next six days. You cannot slip up. You have to let him believe he has completely outsmarted you."

"Don't worry, Mark," Natalie said, standing up and pulling her arm gently out of the sling for the first time. The pain was still there, but she barely felt it now. "I’ve been practicing for fourteen years."
