Chapter 7 - The Developers Gala

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a dazzling spectacle of gold leaf, crystal chandeliers, and Chicago’s most powerful elite. Over five hundred developers, politicians, hedge fund managers, and journalists packed the floor.
Camera flashes exploded like strobes as Grant and Natalie walked down the red carpet at the entrance.
Grant was in his element, flashing his brilliant, million-dollar corporate smile, shaking hands with senators, kissing the cheeks of society hostesses, and accepting early congratulations on the imminent Apex merger.
Natalie walked beside him, poised, graceful, and smiling for every camera.
"You're doing great, Nat," Grant whispered in her ear as they moved toward the VIP lounge near the main stage. "Just stay by my side, look pretty, and let me handle the press."
"Of course, Grant," she whispered back.
In her right ear, a tiny, invisible earpiece crackled to life. Mark Callahan’s voice spoke smoothly:
"Natalie, we are in position. I'm parked in the mobile command trailer across Michigan Avenue. Chloe has established a live mirror on Grant’s corporate server. The moment he plugs his security token into the transaction terminal on stage, we strike."
Natalie tapped her clutch purse twice—a signal that she understood.
Across the room, standing near the champagne fountain, was Julianna Vance.
She looked striking in a tight crimson dress, holding a clip-board and overseeing the event’s press itinerary. When her eyes met Natalie’s, Julianna gave a polite, icy nod of acknowledgment.
Natalie smiled back—a sweet, utterly deadly smile.
At 9:30 PM, the master of ceremonies took the stage.
"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests," the MC’s voice boomed through the speakers. "Tonight, we celebrate visionary leadership. Please welcome the Founder and CEO of Mercer Global Development—Mr. Grant Mercer!"
The ballroom erupted in loud applause.
Grant straightened his tuxedo jacket, squeezed Natalie’s hand briefly, and strode confidently up the stairs to the stage. Behind him, a massive high-definition LED screen displayed the logo of Mercer Global merging with the logo of Apex Holdings.
Natalie stepped back into the shadows near the edge of the stage, right beside the media control booth.
Rachel slipped through the crowd, appearing at Natalie’s side, wearing a slick black formal jumpsuit.
"Is everything ready?" Rachel whispered under her breath.
"Mark is on the line," Natalie murmured. "Where is Carter Vance?"
Rachel pointed toward the front row. Carter Vance was sitting at Table 1, holding a leather document portfolio containing the final physical merger contracts.
On stage, Grant took his place behind a polished glass podium. A digital wire-transfer terminal sat beside the microphone.
"Thank you, everyone," Grant began, his voice commanding the absolute silence of the room. "Fourteen years ago, I started Mercer Global with a simple vision: to reshape the skyline of this great city. Tonight, with the acquisition of Apex Holdings, we take the final step in securing our legacy."
He looked down at the front row, catching Julianna’s eye and giving her a subtle, knowing wink.
"To complete this historic partnership," Grant continued, pulling a gold-plated security USB key from his pocket, "I will now execute the primary asset transfer that solidifies our global equity pool."
He inserted the gold key into the terminal. The massive screen behind him displayed a real-time progress window:
AUTHORIZING TRANSACTION: $30,000,000.00RECIPIENT: NEVIS HOLDINGS INC. (CAYMAN/NEVIS)
Grant smiled, reaching out his finger to press the final touchscreen button: CONFIRM WIRE.

In Natalie’s earpiece, Mark’s voice barked: "NOW, NATALIE!"
Natalie reached into her purse and hit the red button on her encrypted tablet.
