Chapter 8 - The Public Reckoning

Before Grant’s finger could make contact with the touchscreen, the massive LED screen behind him flickered violently.

The gold logos of Mercer Global and Apex Holdings vanished.

In their place, high-definition documents began auto-scrolling across the fifty-foot screen.

The room gasped.

It wasn't corporate financial charts.

It was a glowing red title banner: OFFSHORE FRAUD AND ASSET CONCEALMENT REPORT: GRANT MERCER.

Below the banner, scrawled in massive, legible text, were the leaked bank statements from Nevis Holdings, displaying Grant’s name alongside Julianna Vance’s as co-signatories of forty-seven million dollars in stolen community assets.

"What the hell is this?" Grant muttered, dropping his hands from the podium. He spun around, staring at the screen in utter horror. "Turn that off! Technical team, turn that screen off now!"

The media control booth operator tried frantically to kill the power, but Mark Callahan’s team had executed a total hardware override of the venue’s AV system.

The screen cut to a new slide.

It was an audio file waveform.

The ballroom’s powerful surround-sound speakers suddenly blasted Grant’s own recorded voice across the room, echoing loudly off the gilded ceiling:

"She came back this afternoon. Played the wounded, obedient wife routine... Natalie doesn't have the stomach for a fight. She’s soft, Julianna. She spent fourteen years letting me run her life. She’s not going to start digging now."

A collective, deafening gasp rippled across five hundred guests.

Reporters instantly raised their cameras, flashbulbs exploding like a lightning storm.

"Cut the sound! CUT THE SOUND!" Grant screamed, his face turning purple with rage. He rushed toward the edge of the stage. "Where is the manager?!"

Carter Vance stood up from Table 1, his face pale as death, shouting at the technicians. Julianna Vance froze in the center of the room, backing away slowly as dozens of smartphones turned to record her face.

Then, the heavy double doors at the back of the Grand Ballroom swung open.

Four men in sharp navy suits entered the room, led by Mark Callahan and two uniformed officers from the Cook County Sheriff’s Department.

Mark walked down the center aisle, his shoes clicking loudly against the polished parquet floor. He held a thick stack of legal documents tied with a red ribbon.

The crowd parted for him like the Red Sea.

Mark stepped up to the edge of the stage, looking up at Grant.

"Grant Mercer," Mark’s voice echoed calmly through the silent room. "You are hereby served with a Temporary Restraining Order, an immediate Injunction freezing all domestic and international assets of Mercer Global, and a Summons for Dissolution of Marriage filed on behalf of your wife, Natalie Mercer."

Grant stood frozen on stage, gasping for air as if he had been struck in the chest. "This is a mistake... This is an illegal hack! Carter, do something!"

Carter Vance stepped forward, pointing an angry finger at Mark. "Callahan, you can't serve papers at a private corporate event! This is tortious interference!"

"Read page four, Carter," Mark replied smoothly, not even glancing at him. "It’s a court-ordered emergency asset preservation order signed two hours ago by Federal Judge Elizabeth Vance. All wire transfers initiated from this venue are currently intercepted and seized by federal receivers."

Grant turned his head slowly, his eyes wild, searching the crowd.

"Natalie..." he rasped into the microphone, his voice broadcast across the whole room. "Natalie! Where are you?!"

Natalie stepped out from the shadows of the stage.

She didn't hide. She didn't flinch.

She walked slowly into the bright spotlight in the center of the stage, wearing her emerald dress, standing tall, elegant, and completely unbothered.

She walked directly up to Grant.

The entire room held its breath.

Grant stared at her, his lips trembling, his polished corporate facade completely disintegrated. "Nat... please. You don't know what you're doing. We can fix this. We're a team..."

Natalie looked at the man she had loved for fourteen years—the man who had left her sitting in a wheelchair with broken ribs while he transferred millions to his mistress.

She leaned into his ear and whispered:

"You told Julianna I didn't have the stomach for a fight."

May you like

She pulled the diamond Cartier bracelet—the bribe he had given her—out of her clutch purse and dropped it onto the glass podium beside the frozen terminal.

"Happy anniversary, Grant."
