Chapter 6 - The Velvet Trap

The next five days were an exercise in psychological warfare.

Natalie returned home and transformed into the ideal, dutiful corporate spouse. She organized Grant’s dry cleaning, reviewed his public relations talking points for the upcoming Developers Gala, and even sat through a excruciating two-hour lunch with Victoria Mercer at the Peninsula Hotel.

Victoria had spent the entire lunch offering condescending advice on how Natalie could "keep Grant’s focus at home" while slipping subtle jabs about her appearance and family background.

Natalie had simply smiled, nodded, and politely took notes on her phone—while secretly recording every word Victoria said about Grant’s hidden bank accounts for Mark Callahan’s file.

Meanwhile, Grant was completely oblivious.

Convinced that his wife had been thoroughly cowed by his financial dominance and emotional manipulation, Grant grew increasingly careless. He left his secondary encrypted phone on the nightstand while taking showers. He made hushed calls to Julianna from the garden terrace, unaware that Natalie had installed tiny, professional-grade recording devices—purchased by Mark’s investigator—inside the outdoor light fixtures.

By Wednesday evening, the trap was fully bailed and set.

Natalie sat at her vanity mirror in the master bedroom, carefully applying makeup over the fading yellowish bruise near her eye. The twelve stitches above her eyebrow had been removed that morning, leaving a thin, pale pink scar.

Grant walked into the dressing room, adjusting his black silk bow tie. He looked resplendent in a custom Tom Ford tuxedo.

He stepped behind Natalie, placing his large hands lightly on her shoulders. He looked at her reflection in the glass.

"You look stunning, Nat," he said, his voice dripping with affection. "That scar actually gives you a bit of... edge. Very fierce."

"Thank you, Grant," she said softly, meeting his eyes in the mirror without flinching. "I feel different."

"Different how?" he asked, frowning slightly.

"Stronger," she replied calmly. "Ready for tonight."

Grant smiled, patting her shoulder. "Tonight is going to be historic. The Apex merger closes at midnight. Mercer Global becomes the largest private development firm in the Midwest. And tomorrow... tomorrow we fly to St. Barts."

"I can't wait," Natalie said, standing up. She wore a floor-length emerald green silk gown with a soaring side slit and an asymmetrical shoulder that gracefully concealed the surgical tape over her ribs.

She looked regal, dangerous, and completely transformed.

Grant handed her a small glass of vintage champagne. "To fourteen years of marriage," he toasted, clinking his glass against hers. "To building an empire together."

Natalie raised her glass, looking him straight in the eyes.

"To building an empire," she repeated softly. "And watching it fall."

Grant paused, his glass halfway to his lips. "What did you say?"

Natalie smiled warmly, taking a small sip. "I said, and watching it soar. You misheard me, darling."

Grant chuckled, shaking his head. "Ah. The acoustics in this room are strange. Come on, the driver is waiting downstairs."

As they walked out to the waiting stretch limousine, Natalie checked her purse one last time.

Inside lay a high-encrypted tablet connected directly to Mark Callahan’s team, a secure earpiece, and a small brass key.

Tonight wasn't just a gala. It was execution day.
