Chapter 29 - The Vault Showdown

Evan stepped around the corner of the vault doorway, his Sig Sauer raised and locked directly on the center of her chest. "Step away from the terminal, hands where we can see them. Federal jurisdiction. The game is over."
My sister—the ghost from the Swiss clinic, the architect of the balcony fall—slowly turned around. She wasn't holding a weapon. Instead, she was holding a small, red detonator switch attached to a bundle of industrial-grade breaching charges wired directly into the vault’s primary support pillars.
"Is it?" She smiled, a terrifying, manic gleam in her eyes that mirrored our mother's worst moments of unhinged vanity. "Evan, darling, if you pull that trigger, you won't just kill me. You'll detonate the charges wired into the foundation of this entire bunker. And when this place caves in, the physical ledger override is destroyed forever. The blockchain transfer finishes validating in exactly twelve minutes, and Victoria loses everything."
I stepped out from behind Evan, my boots clicking sharply against the cold concrete floor of the vault. I raised my Glock, keeping the barrel steady, aimed straight at her shoulder.
"You think you're the only smart one in this family," I said, my voice cutting through the damp air like a razor blade. "You spent ten years plotting revenge against parents who locked you away, and you used me as a pawn to do it. You pushed me off that balcony because you needed my signature to activate the Lazarus Trust."
"And it worked brilliantly, didn't it?" she laughed, her eyes wide and unblinking. "Until you and your corporate attack dog decided to play detective."
"It worked until you made one fatal mistake," I said, taking another step closer.
She frowned slightly, her manic confidence wavering for a fraction of a second. "What mistake?"
"You assumed I didn't already trigger the manual override from my phone while we were in the car on the way here," I lied smoothly, watching her face pale.
Her eyes darted down to the laptop screen. The progress bar for the blockchain transfer suddenly stalled, flashing a bright yellow warning: *ERROR: BIOMETRIC OVERRIDE DETECTED. TRANSACTION FROZEN.*
"No..." she gasped, her face twisting in pure rage. "That's impossible!"
Before she could press the detonator switch, Evan lunged forward with blinding speed, tackling her to the concrete floor and wrenching the red trigger out of her hand. The detonator skidded across the stone floor, harmless and disconnected.

I stepped forward, pressing the barrel of my gun down toward the floor beside her head, and smiled. "Checkmate, sister."
