Chapter 3 - The Unraveling Lie

The Truth Goes LiveThe room fell into a suffocating silence. My mother smiled coldly, crossing her arms over her champagne dress, convinced she had won. My father held out the conservatorship paperwork toward Dr. Vance, expecting the surgeon to bow to legal intimidation.

Then Evan let out a low, bitter laugh.

"You really think you're smart, don't you, Charles?" Evan asked, pulling a second device from his pocket—an iPad connected to a mobile hotspot. "You think you can play corporate shell games while your daughter lies in a hospital bed?"

"Evan, don't do this," Taryn whimpered, stepping toward him with her hands clasped together in a pleading gesture. "We’re supposed to get married in twelve hours! 300 guests are flying into Savannah! The mayor is coming!"

"There is no wedding, Taryn," Evan repeated, his voice devoid of any warmth. "In fact, I just sent a push notification to every single guest on our digital invitation list."

Taryn’s face drained of all color. "You... you what?"

Evan tapped the iPad screen. "I uploaded the raw venue security footage along with the audio from Jules's phone to a secure cloud server. I linked it directly to the wedding website homepage. Right now, every groomsman, bridesmaid, cousin, business associate, and city official who was planning to watch you walk down the aisle is watching you push your crippled sister off a balcony and laugh about it."

"NO!" Taryn screamed, lunging toward Evan.

Charles tried to grab the iPad, but Dr. Vance stepped in front of him, blocking him with his broad frame. "Touch that equipment, sir, and I will have hospital security arrest you for assault immediately."

Taryn frantically pulled out her own phone. The notifications were already pouring in like a tidal wave. Messages, missed calls, and social media tags were flashing across her screen faster than she could scroll.

"Delete it! EVAN, DELETE IT!" Taryn shrieked, hysterical now, her pristine facade shattering into millions of pieces. She clawed at her own hair. "You're ruining my life! This was supposed to be MY weekend!"

"You ruined your own life the second you treated human life like a viral stunt," Evan said coldly.

Vivian turned on me, her eyes burning with pure malice. "You did this! You always hated Taryn because she was prettier, more popular, and found a wealthy husband! You set her up!"

"I set her up?" I gasped, pain shooting through my spine as my blood pressure spiked. "She pushed me, Mom! I can't feel my feet!"

"You're a liar!" Vivian shouted, stepping toward my bed with her manicured hand raised as if to strike me. "You fell because you were drunk!"

"BACK AWAY FROM THE PATIENT!" Dr. Vance roared, hitting the emergency call button on the wall.

Within ten seconds, three heavy-set hospital security guards burst through the double doors.

"Escort these three people off the premises immediately," Dr. Vance ordered, pointing at my parents and Taryn. "They are interfering with emergency medical care and attempting to intimidate a patient."

"You can't kick us out! We are her family!" Charles bellowed as a guard grabbed his arm, forcing him backward toward the exit. "Audrey, if you don't drop this, I will liquidate every single asset Winslow Heritage Design owns! You won't have a dime left!"

"Try it, Charles," Evan said, stepping up right next to my father's ear. "Because while you were standing here threatening your daughter, my family's legal team filed an emergency injunction with the Chatham County Superior Court. The $62,000 you stole? The account is frozen. And the district attorney is currently reviewing the video for attempt to commit aggravated assault and grand larceny."

My father’s arrogant expression finally crumbled into utter panic.

As the guards dragged my screaming mother, hysterical sister, and pale-faced father down the hallway, the hospital corridor finally fell silent.

Evan turned back to me, his chest heaving. He walked over to my bedside and took my cold hand in his.

"Are you okay, Audrey?" he asked softly.

I looked down at the iPad screen, which was still displaying the wedding website. The video was already going viral across local media outlets in Savannah.

"I can't feel my legs, Evan," I whispered, tears rolling down my cheeks. "And I don't know if I'll ever be able to walk again."

"You're going to have the surgery," Evan promised, looking into my eyes with unshakeable determination. "I’ll pay for it myself if your accounts are locked. You're going to stand up again, Audrey. And together, we are going to make sure they answer for every single thing they took from you."
