Chapter 8 - The Financial Audit

Reclaiming What Was StolenOver the next four weeks, the house of cards my parents and Taryn had built completely disintegrated.
With the help of Evan and a team of forensic accountants, we conducted a total audit of Winslow Heritage Design and my parents' private finances. The revelations were staggering.
My father had not only taken out $400,000 in illegal loans under my identity—he had also taken out a secret $1 million life insurance policy on me three weeks after my car accident, naming Taryn as the sole beneficiary.
When Detective Marcus presented that piece of evidence to the district attorney, Taryn’s charge of Felony Aggravated Assault was officially upgraded to Attempted Premeditated Murder for Financial Gain.
The news shattered my mother entirely. Facing absolute social ostracization and complete financial ruin, Vivian Winslow abandoned my father and Taryn, attempting to fly to Paris using a secret offshore bank account she had hidden in the Cayman Islands.
However, federal agents intercepted her at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. She was arrested on federal tax evasion and money laundering charges before she could board the plane.
Meanwhile, my recovery was nothing short of miraculous.
Every single morning at 6:00 AM, I was in the physical therapy rehab unit at Memorial Health. The pain of retraining my legs to bear weight was intense, but I refused to give up.
Evan was there every single day.
He didn't just act as my legal advocate; he held my hands as I practiced taking my first shaky steps along the parallel bars. He brought me files from my office, helping me manage my restoration firm from my hospital room so my five employees wouldn't lose their jobs.
"Why are you doing all this, Evan?" I asked him one late afternoon as we sat in the hospital garden. I was leaning against a walker, my feet resting firmly on the green grass. "You didn't owe me anything. You were engaged to my sister."
Evan looked at me, his blue eyes soft and sincere.
"I was blind for two years, Audrey," he confessed softly. "I was captivated by an image of a family that didn't exist. But whenever I went to your family's house, you were the only real person there. You were the one who worked hard, who cared about people, who built something real. When I saw her push you... it was like a blindfold was torn off my eyes. I realized I had almost married a monster, while the most incredible woman in the world was being destroyed by them."
My heart skipped a beat. For the first time in months, I felt a genuine spark of warmth blooming in my chest.

"I took my first five unassisted steps today, Evan," I whispered, smiling up at him.
He reached out and gently cupped my cheek. "Then let's take the next five together."
