Chapter 9 - The Trial and Judgment

Justice Delivered

Six months later.

The trial of State of Georgia v. Taryn Winslow, Charles Winslow, and Vivian Winslow became one of the most publicized court cases in Georgia history.

The prosecution presented a mountain of unassailable evidence:

The 4K venue video showing the deliberate push.

Forensic digital evidence proving Taryn instructed Jules to delete the footage.

The $1 million fraudulent life insurance policy.

Bank records showing the immediate transfer of $62,000 while I was lying in the trauma unit.

My parents tried to turn on each other during the trial. My father claimed my mother orchestrated the loan fraud; my mother claimed my father forced her to sign the offshore tax documents; and Taryn’s defense team tried to argue she suffered from a "sudden psychological episode" caused by wedding stress.

The jury wasn't buying a single word.

It took them less than two hours of deliberation to return a verdict.

Taryn Winslow: Guilty of Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Tampering with Evidence. Sentenced to 22 years in state prison without the possibility of parole for the first 15 years.

Charles Winslow: Guilty of Identity Theft, Grand Larceny, Bank Fraud, and Conspiracy. Sentenced to 18 years in federal prison and ordered to pay $1.2 million in restitution.

Vivian Winslow: Guilty of Money Laundering, Tax Evasion, and Accessary to Grand Larceny. Sentenced to 8 years in federal prison.

As the judge read the final sentences, my mother dissolved into hysterics, while my father stared blankly at the defense table. Taryn turned to look at me one last time as the prison guards placed heavy iron shackles around her ankles and wrists.

Her tears were real now—not because she regretted hurting me, but because she finally realized that her youth, her beauty, and her luxurious life were completely gone.

I sat in the front row of the courtroom.

I wasn't in a wheelchair.

I wasn't using a walker.

I stood up on my own two feet, holding my head high, wearing a sleek black dress and my favorite pair of heels. I looked my sister in the eye, gave her a quiet, dignified nod, and watched her walk away into the darkness of the holding cell.
