Chapter 2 - THE COLD RAIN OF CRUELTY

With a malicious smirk, Vanessa set her champagne glass on a silver tray held by a passing waiter. She walked over to the edge of the flowerbed, grabbed a heavy green garden hose attached to a brass spigot, and cranked the valve all the way to the left.
The pressure surged through the hose.
Before I could take another breath, a blast of freezing water hit me square in the face.
The shock was immediate. The icy stream knocked the breath from my lungs, soaking through my weathered shawl, drenching my hair, and saturating my cheap, thin shirt. The force drove me down onto one knee in the wet grass. Mud splashed across my knees and onto my secondhand shoes.
"Look at her!" Vanessa called out, laughing loudly as she swept the nozzle back and forth, soaking me from head to toe. "She walked in here like she belonged! What's next? Is she going to beg for an invitation to the actual wedding?"
Laughter erupted from the crowd.
A man in a tailored navy suit raised his smartphone, filming me like I was a carnival act. Women covered their mouths, giggling behind manicured hands. Thirty wealthy, influential people stood in a circle, watching an elderly, drenched woman kneeling in the dirt, and not one single person raised a voice to stop it.
I pulled my reusable grocery tote tightly against my chest, hunching over to protect the camera lens inside the water-resistant sleeve. The phone kept rolling, capturing every smile, every laugh, every icy drop of water, and every word of abuse.
Vanessa cut the water off, tossing the hose onto the grass. She walked up to where I knelt, crouching down so her face was inches from mine. The smell of expensive floral perfume clashed with the wet earth.
"Let this be a lesson to you," she whispered, her voice a poisonous purr. "People like you are garbage under our feet. You don't belong in our world. If I ever see your filthy face near Ethan or this estate again, I'll make sure you spend the rest of your miserable life in a cell."
A young server—a boy no older than twenty, wearing a crisp black vest—hurried over from the catering station. He was trembling, holding a clean, folded white cloth napkin.
"Ma'am... oh God, ma'am, are you okay?" he stammered, extending the napkin to help wipe the freezing water from my eyes. "Let me help you up—"
Vanessa snapped around, her eyes flashing with pure rage. "If you touch her," she hissed, her voice dripping with venom, "you won't have a job by the time we serve cake. In fact, I'll make sure your agency blacklists you across the state."
The young boy froze, his face pale with fear, pulling his hand back.
I reached out with my wet, shaking hand and gently patted his forearm. "It's all right, dear," I said softly, my voice calm despite the water dripping down my cheeks. "Don't ruin your future for me. Today is the day everyone shows who they really are."
Vanessa rolled her eyes with an exaggerated sigh. "Please. Now the homeless woman wants to lecture us about morals."
I straightened my back. Slowly, deliberately, I looked up and met Vanessa’s gaze directly. The trembling act faded. My eyes, hard as refined steel, locked onto hers.
"Look closely at me," I said. My voice was no longer weak or raspy. It carried the absolute authority of a woman who had built empires from nothing. "This is the last time you will humiliate another human being and walk away believing you are untouchable."

Vanessa’s smirk wavered for a fraction of a second. Something in my tone chilled her. "Is that supposed to scare me?"
I didn't answer. I simply smiled. Because at that exact moment, the heavy glass patio doors of the main mansion slid open.
