Chapter 6 - THE PUBLIC STORM

By eight o'clock the following morning, the news broke across national media outlets.
“DRAMA AT THE MITCHELL ESTATE: STRANGER ATTACKS HEIRESS AT ENGAGEMENT PARTY.”
A heavily edited ten-second video clip, leaked anonymously to a prominent tabloid, showed me stepping onto the lawn of the Belle Meade estate, wearing my ragged shawl and clutching my tote bag. The article painted me as an unhinged trespasser who had harassed Vanessa Mitchell, forcing the frightened heiress to defend herself with a water hose until security arrived.
The internet reacted with predictable speed. Social media flooded with commentary. Mitchell Capital released a formal statement expressing "deep regret over the unfortunate security breach," subtly implying that Ethan Carter’s mother was suffering from severe cognitive decline and required professional psychiatric help.
In my private study, Ethan stared at his laptop screen, his face pale with fury.
"They are dragging your name through the mud, Mom!" Ethan slammed his hand on the desk. "They’re calling you crazy! They’re saying you attacked Vanessa! I'm calling our legal team right now to file a fifty-million-dollar defamation suit!"
"Patience, Ethan," I said calmly, sitting in my leather armchair, sipping my morning espresso. I was wearing a tailored navy wool suit, my silver hair pinned neatly back.
"Patience?!" Ethan yelled. "Mom, they're destroying your reputation!"
"A reputation built over forty years cannot be destroyed by a cheap tabloid article written by panicked amateurs," I replied smoothly.
I reached into my bag and pulled out a sleek silver flash drive.
"What is that?" Ethan asked.
"The canvas tote bag," I smiled faintly. "The phone inside was recording continuous, unedited 4K video from the moment I walked through the gates to the moment you stepped onto the lawn. It captured every insult, every laugh, Vanessa’s exact words about 'beggars having no place at weddings,' her parents ordering security to search my bag for stolen goods, and the entire minute she held that hose over me while thirty people laughed."
Ethan took the flash drive, his eyes wide. "You have the whole thing?"

"Clear audio. High-definition video. Perfectly preserved metadata," I said softly. "The Mitchells thought they were controlling the narrative. They don't realize they just walked directly into a trap of their own making."
I leaned forward, my tone hardening. "Call the managing editors of the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and NBC News. Tell them Katherine Carter is holding an emergency press conference at eleven o'clock at the Carter Global headquarters."
