Chapter 4 - THE FALL OF THE MASK

A suffocating silence fell over the lawn.
It was as if all the oxygen had been sucked out of the air. Patricia Mitchell staggered backward, her hand flying to her throat, clutching her pearls so tightly they nearly snapped. George Mitchell’s jaw dropped; the glass of whiskey in his hand began to shake violently, liquid sloshing over his knuckles.
Vanessa stood frozen. The garden hose lay at her feet, still trickling water into the mud. The color had completely vanished from her face, leaving her looking paper-white beneath her heavy makeup.
"Ethan... I—I didn't know," Vanessa stammered, her voice suddenly high, weak, and frantic. "She... she was dressed like... she looked like a beggar! It was a mistake! A joke! Just a prank!"
"A prank?" Ethan echoed. His voice was terrifyingly calm now, devoid of any warmth.
He turned, taking my hand gently to help me stand up. He pulled a crisp silk handkerchief from his breast pocket and tenderly wiped the dirty water from my cheek and forehead.
"You humiliated a human being just for sport," Ethan said, turning his lethal gaze back to Vanessa. "You proved your cruelty, your arrogance, and your utter lack of empathy in front of thirty witnesses. You didn't just insult a woman, Vanessa. You showed me who you truly are when you think there are no consequences."
"Ethan, please!" George Mitchell pleaded, stepping forward, his voice cracking with desperation. The multi-billion-dollar joint venture—the deal that was meant to save Mitchell Capital from mounting debts—was disintegrating before his eyes. "Let's go inside! Let's sit down and talk like adults! It's a massive misunderstanding! Vanessa is young, she made an unthinking mistake—"
"She is twenty-six years old, George," Ethan interrupted coldly. "She is old enough to know that human dignity is not subject to a net worth check."
Ethan looked at Vanessa, who was now crying real, panicked tears—not of remorse, but of sheer terror at the annihilation of her golden future.
"The engagement is over," Ethan declared, his words echoing clearly across the silent grounds. "Effective immediately."
"Ethan! No! You love me!" Vanessa shrieked, taking a step toward him, dropping her hands to her sides in desperation.

"I loved the woman I thought you were," Ethan replied, staring at her with absolute indifference. "That woman never existed."
He turned to George. "And as of right now, Carter Global Holdings is severing all financial ties with Mitchell Capital. Every contract, every loan guarantee, every pending investment is cancelled. Security will escort your family off this property within ten minutes."
