Chapter 10 - The Ledger of Life

Two years later.

The summer sun shone bright over the wide green lawn of Sarah’s cottage in Greenwich.

Laughter echoed across the backyard. A wooden playground set stood near the oak tree, where two-year-old Leo was happily sliding down a bright blue slide into the arms of a tall, warm-eyed man with graying temples.

His name was Thomas Mercer—a retired Federal Prosecutor turned law professor whom Sarah had met during a corporate fraud seminar six months ago. Thomas was kind, grounded, patient, and deeply devoted to both Sarah and little Leo.

"Catch me, Tom!" Leo giggled, throwing his arms around Thomas's neck as he slid down.

"Gotcha, buddy!" Thomas laughed, tossing Leo up onto his shoulders, making the toddler shriek with joy.

Sarah sat on the shaded back porch, holding a warm mug of tea, watching the two of them play.

Her life was complete. Her firm, Vance Advisory, was thriving, allowing her the flexibility to spend every afternoon with her son. She had bought out the cottage entirely, created a high-yield trust fund for Leo’s future education, and surrounded herself with genuine love, respect, and peace.

Her phone chimed on the table beside her. It was a text notification from her legal team:

Final court notice: William Vance’s petition for modified visitation dismissed due to failure to maintain stable employment and non-payment of child support arrears. Case closed permanently.

Sarah looked at the screen for a moment, then quietly swiped the notification away.

She didn't need to check the numbers anymore. The audit was over. The balance sheet of her life had finally come out positive.

"Mommy! Look!" Leo came running across the green lawn, holding up a bright yellow dandelion he had picked from the grass. "For you!"

Sarah knelt down, wrapping her arms around her healthy, radiant boy, taking the flower and holding it tight against her heart.

"It's beautiful, sweetheart," Sarah whispered, kissing his chubby cheek. "Just like our life."

Thomas walked up, placing a gentle, protective hand on Sarah's shoulder, smiling down at them as the late afternoon sun bathed the yard in warm, golden light.

The champagne roses had bruised long ago, but from their ashes, Sarah Vance had built a fortress of strength, love, and unbreakable peace.
