Chapter 3 - The Fragile Spark

The glass-and-steel skyscraper housing the offices of Vance Architectural Concepts was usually a place of quiet, high-end productivity. But when William stepped off the elevator on Monday morning, the atmosphere felt like a crime scene.

Employees were huddled around workstations, whispering under their breath. As soon as William walked past, conversations abruptly ceased.

William marched straight toward his private office, only to find two uniformed officers from the Sheriff's Department standing outside his door alongside a sharp-looking woman in a charcoal grey suit.

"William Vance?" the woman asked, holding up a badge. "I’m Investigator Miller from the State Financial Crimes Unit. We are executing a search warrant for the server logs, accounting hard drives, and physical records of Vance Architectural Concepts."

"What?!" William gasped. "On what authority? This is a private firm!"

"Your former CFO and wife, Sarah Vance, provided certified forensic evidence alleging multi-year tax evasion, improper personal deductions exceeding $1.2 million, and wire fraud," Investigator Miller stated calmly. "Step away from the desk, sir. You are not permitted to touch any digital devices."

Just then, Chloe Davis rushed out of her adjacent design office, wearing a lime-green designer dress, her face red with panic.

"Will!" Chloe cried out, grabbing his arm. "What is happening?! Two men just locked my computer! They said my corporate card was suspended, and my landlord called saying the rent check for my apartment bounced!"

William looked at Chloe, and for the very first time, the illusion shattered. Without the soft lighting of Cabo, the champagne, and the luxury backdrop, Chloe didn't look like an inspiring muse. She looked young, reckless, demanding, and utterly terrified.

"Chloe, calm down," William hissed under his breath, trying to pull his arm away. "It's a temporary freeze. Sarah is trying to play hardball."

"Hardball?!" Chloe shrieked, ignoring the stares of the twenty staff members watching them. "My personal savings account is linked to that LLC you set up for me! I tried to buy a coffee this morning and my card was declined! She can't do this! Tell them to unfreeze my money!"

Investigator Miller stepped forward, handing Chloe a white envelope. "Ms. Davis? You have been formally subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury next Tuesday regarding corporate transfers from Vance Architectural to 'CD Creative Consulting LLC.' Do not travel outside the state."

Chloe’s jaw dropped. She looked at the subpoena, then at William, her eyes widening in horror. "A grand jury?! Will, you told me that LLC was completely legal! You told me it was just a tax write-off strategy your wife didn't need to know about!"

"Shut up, Chloe!" William snapped loudly, his composure breaking entirely.

The entire office went dead silent.

Chloe stared at him, her lips trembling, her tone shifting instantly from panic to toxic venom. "Don't you dare raise your voice at me! You told me she was stupid! You told me she was just sitting at home doing nothing while you built an empire! She isn't stupid, Will—SHE'S DESTROYING US!"

Before William could answer, his personal attorney, Marcus, strode out of the elevator, holding a thick leather briefcase, looking pale.

"William. In my office. Now," Marcus said sternly, eyeing Chloe with obvious disdain. "Ms. Davis, you should call your own lawyer. You are no longer permitted on these premises under the terms of the corporate asset freeze."

"What?!" Chloe yelled. "Will, tell him!"

"Leave, Chloe!" William yelled back, exhaustion and despair crushing his chest. "Just go home!"

Chloe stomped her heel, glared at the gathered staff, snatched her purse, and stormed out toward the elevators.

Inside William’s inner office, Marcus closed the door and pulled down the blinds.

"It's worse than I thought," Marcus said, laying out a stack of documents. "Sarah didn't just audit your accounts. She audited every single project you’ve managed for the last five years."

"So what?" William argued defensively, sitting down heavily behind his desk. "I'm the lead architect! I bring in the clients! I spend money to make money!"

"You used company money to pay for Chloe's apartment lease, her car payment, her luxury clothes, and your private trips, and you classified them as 'Subcontractor Design Fees,'" Marcus explained, pointing at a highlighted line on the paper. "That is tax fraud, William. But that’s not even the main problem."

"Then what is?"

Marcus looked up, his eyes grave. "The main problem is where Sarah is right now."

William leaned forward. "Where is she? Where is my son?"

"She isn't hiding, William," Marcus said quietly. "She's at Mount Sinai Children's Hospital. Leo is out of the ICU, but he requires specialized treatment for blood exchange therapy. And Sarah has just been granted sole legal and physical custody pendente lite by Judge Harrison."

"Judge Harrison?!" William gasped. "He's the toughest family court judge in the state!"

"And his daughter died of pediatric jaundice complications ten years ago," Marcus added, dealing the final emotional blow. "When Judge Harrison saw the hospital admission records showing Sarah begging the hospital to save her baby while you were ignoring 42 emergency calls from Cabo... he signed the protective custody order without hesitation."

William buried his face in his hands, the cold reality finally crashing through his denial.
