Chapter 7 - The Ripple Effect

News of the scandal blew through the architectural and financial circles of New York like a hurricane.

Architectural Digest pulled their featured cover story on William Vance. The American Institute of Architects suspended his professional license pending an ethics review. Within thirty days of the settlement, Vance Architectural Concepts filed for Chapter 7 liquidation.

William was forced to sell his luxury car, move out of his apartment, and rent a tiny, dingy studio in Queens while working as an entry-level draftsman for a small structural firm—the only company willing to hire a man burdened with IRS tax liens and a ruined reputation.

Meanwhile, Chloe Davis fared no better.

When the forensic audit revealed that she had accepted over $200,000 in fraudulently converted corporate funds from William, the court ordered her to return every gift, item, and dollar amount. Her designer handbags, her Cartier jewelry, and her lease were seized by court marshals.

Worse still, news of her stunt—showing up at a postpartum mother's home to brag about an affair—spread through the interior design community like wildfire. No reputable design firm in the city would hire her. Her social media accounts were flooded with thousands of angry comments after local lifestyle blogs picked up the court filings.

One rainy afternoon in November, Chloe sat inside a cramped coffee shop, frantically typing on her laptop, searching for entry-level retail jobs.

Suddenly, a shadow fell over her table.

Chloe looked up, expecting a barista. Instead, she found William standing over her.

He looked ten years older. His expensive suits were gone, replaced by a faded rain jacket and scuffed shoes.

"Will?" Chloe gasped, surprised.

William stared at her, his eyes cold and hollow. "I heard you were living in Brooklyn with your sister."

Chloe scoffed defensively, leaning back. "What do you want, Will? Came to blame me for your life falling apart again?"

"I lost everything, Chloe," William said quietly, his voice dead. "My son. My wife. My firm. My name."

"You lost it because you were careless!" Chloe spat, her tone sharp. "You lied to me! You told me your wife was a clueless housewife! You let me walk right into her house without telling me she was a high-level forensic auditor!"

"She was my wife," William said, a strange, tragic realization settling over his face. "She built my life with me. And I threw her away for a girl who liked free trips to Cabo."

"Get away from me, Will," Chloe snapped, turning back to her screen. "We're done. Leave me alone."

William looked at her for a long moment, nodding slowly to himself. "Yeah. We're done."

He turned and walked out into the pouring rain, lost in the sea of crowded Manhattan streets, just another anonymous face in a city that had already forgotten his name.
