Chapter 2 - The Audit Begins

The recording started with the sound of a doorbell, followed by the quiet click of the townhouse's heavy mahogany front door opening.

“Can I help you?” Sarah’s voice on the recording was raspy, strained from sleep deprivation, but steady.

“You must be Sarah,” Chloe’s voice purred through the speakers. The tone was dripping with false sympathy, patronizing and sharp. “I’m Chloe. I think it’s time we had an adult conversation, woman to woman.”

“William isn’t here,” Sarah replied calmly. “He’s in Mexico on a business trip.”

“Oh, honey,” Chloe chuckled softly, the sound of her expensive heels clicking onto the entryway marble. “He’s in Mexico, yes. But it’s not a business trip. We’ve been sharing a suite at the Esperanza for the past four days. Look, I’m not here to be cruel. I just think you deserve to know the truth so you stop wasting your time holding onto a man who has clearly moved on. Will doesn’t hate you, Sarah. You’re just… safe. He told me living with you lately is like staring at a stagnant pool.”

A long, excruciating five-second silence filled the recording. On the tape, you could hear the distant, faint wail of a newborn baby upstairs.

“A stagnant pool,” Sarah repeated, her voice betraying zero emotion.

“And me? I’m the spark that makes him feel alive,” Chloe continued smoothly. “He’s an artist, Sarah. He needs passion, inspiration, beauty. You’ve turned into a nanny who lives in his house. He sent me to tell you that it’s over, so we don’t have to keep doing this ridiculous dance when we get back.”

“He sent you?” Sarah asked. “William told you to come to my home while I am two weeks postpartum?”

“He didn’t explicitly tell me to drop by, but he implied it,” Chloe said, her confidence flickering for just a fraction of a second before regaining its arrogance. “He wants a clean break. The firm’s money is tied up in our new venture anyway. You should pack your things, take whatever settlement his lawyer offers, and leave quietly.”

“I see,” Sarah said. “Thank you for clarifying, Chloe. Please leave now.”

“Don't be bitter, Sarah. It's just life.”

“I’m not bitter,” Sarah’s voice dropped an octave, turning into something icy, precise, and lethal. “I’m documenting.”

The front door clicked shut on the recording, followed by the sound of Sarah taking a deep breath. Then, her voice spoke directly into what was clearly a recording app on her phone:

“Timestamp: October 14, 2:14 PM. Admission of co-mingling of corporate assets for personal marital infidelity confirmed by third-party beneficiary Chloe Davis. Initiating Phase One financial audit.”

The recording ended.

William felt the room spinning around him. He slammed his laptop shut and grabbed his phone, dialing his senior business lawyer and long-time friend, Marcus Vance (no relation).

"Marcus! Thank God. Pick up!" William yelled into the receiver the moment the line connected. "Sarah has gone crazy! She froze the accounts, took Leo, and cleared out the house. You need to file an emergency motion for custodial interference right now!"

There was a long, heavy sigh on the other end of the line.

"William," Marcus said, his voice completely devoid of their usual warm camaraderie. "Where are you right now?"

"I'm at the townhouse! Where else would I be?"

"I suggest you sit down, William," Marcus replied grimly. "I received a legal service package two hours ago from Keller & Associates. Do you know who Arthur Keller is?"

William’s stomach plummeted. Arthur Keller was the most feared, ruthless matrimonial and asset-recovery attorney in the tri-state area. He didn't take cases; he conducted forensic executions.

"Marcus, listen to me—"

"No, William, YOU listen to me," Marcus interrupted harshly. "Sarah didn't just file for divorce. She filed a 140-page petition detailing systematic corporate embezzlement, tax fraud, fraudulent conveyance of marital property, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. She attached every receipt, every wire transfer, every flight manifest, and every dinner bill from the last eight months where you used Vance Architectural funds to finance your affair with Chloe Davis."

"Those were client entertainment expenses!" William screamed.

"She audited your client logs against your location data, William!" Marcus shouted back. "You billed a $40,000 trip to St. Barts last month as 'Urban Design Research' for a client project that was already completed in June! She proved to the judge that you were transferring money out of joint marital equity accounts into a shell LLC registered in Delaware under Chloe Davis's name!"

William pressed his back against the wall, sliding down until he was sitting on the floor. "I... I was just setting up a sub-consulting firm for Chloe..."

"You were transferring marital assets during a high-risk pregnancy!" Marcus snapped. "And to make matters ten times worse, while you were in Cabo buying Cartier, your infant son was rushed to the pediatric ICU with severe kernicterus risk because you refused to answer your phone when Sarah was trying to reach you for consent on emergency blood transfusions!"

"I had my phone on silent because I was in a meeting!"

"The judge didn't care about your 'meeting,' William," Marcus said coldly. "An ex-parte temporary restraining order and asset preservation freeze was signed three hours ago. You have no money, your corporate accounts are locked, your passport has been flagged, and if you attempt to approach Sarah or Leo, you will be arrested on the spot. Get yourself a criminal defense attorney, William. Because as of 9:00 AM today, this isn't just a divorce anymore. The IRS and the District Attorney's office have been CC'd on the filing."
