Chapter 13 - The Northern Expedition

Two weeks after receiving Brad’s pathetic letter from federal prison, a new challenge landed on my desk that required my immediate personal attention. The Northern Minnesota Agricultural Syndicate—a massive network of over four hundred independent dairy and grain farms—was facing an aggressive hostile takeover orchestrated by a ruthless corporate conglomerate out of Minneapolis called Apex Holdings.
Apex was using the exact same predatory debt-trap tactics that Arthur Sterling had pioneered twenty years prior: buying up distressed municipal loans at a discount, inflating interest rates overnight, and forcing foreclosure proceedings before families even realized their land had been compromised.
“Megan, the syndicate board called an emergency meeting in Duluth,” Marcus said, placing a thick dossier on my desk. “They’ve heard about how you dismantled the Sterling enterprise from the inside out. They want Carter & Associates to lead their financial defense and restructure their cooperative debt before Apex files the final foreclosure injunctions next month.”
“Book a private turboprop for Duluth tomorrow morning,” I instructed without hesitation, my fingers flying across my keyboard as I pulled up Apex Holdings’ corporate registry. “If these corporate scavengers think they can swallow four hundred family farms in my backyard, they picked the wrong forensic accountant.”
By sunrise the next morning, I was soaring above the snow-dusted pine forests of northern Minnesota, staring out the airplane window at the frozen expanse of Lake Superior glistening beneath a slate-gray sky. When we landed at the Duluth regional airport, a sleek black sedan was waiting to transport us directly to the syndicate’s timber-framed headquarters overlooking the harbor.
The conference room was packed to absolute capacity. Over fifty weathered farm owners, union representatives, and regional bankers sat in tense, anxious silence as I walked through the double doors, carrying my leather briefcase with calm, commanding authority.
“Good morning,” I said, my voice cutting cleanly through the murmur of the room as I stepped up to the podium. “I am Megan Carter, founder and principal analyst at Carter & Associates. I know many of you are terrified of losing your land, your homes, and your generational heritage to Apex Holdings. But I am here to tell you today that Apex’s entire corporate structure is built on a foundation of illegal predatory lending and falsified municipal disclosures.”
An audible gasp rippled through the room. An older dairy farmer with calloused hands and a rugged flannel shirt stood up slowly from the front row. “Mrs. Carter, Apex’s legal team has millions of dollars and a dozen corporate attorneys. How do you propose we fight them?”
I smiled, opening my briefcase and pulling out a pristine, color-coded audit report that mapped out every single hidden shell company and illegal kickback scheme tied to Apex Holdings.

“We don’t just fight them in court,” I answered, locking eyes with every single person in the room. “We audit every single cent, expose their federal violations, and force them into bankruptcy before they can even touch a single acre of your land. Let’s open the ledgers.”
