Chapter 5 - A New Harvest

Six months later, the autumn harvest in Iowa arrived with a brilliance that seemed to set the entire countryside on fire. The maple and oak trees along the county roads turned blazing shades of amber and scarlet, and the air carried that crisp, electric promise of winter just around the corner.
I stood on the freshly painted front porch of the main farmhouse at Carter Acres, holding a steaming mug of black coffee in my hands. The old wooden boards no longer creaked in despair; my father had spent the late summer repairing the foundation using funds from the settlement settlement trust the state had awarded our family from the liquidated assets of Sterling Holdings.
My life had shifted back into a rhythm I recognized and loved, but with a profound, unshakeable strength at its core.
My accounting firm in Des Moines—which I had officially launched two months ago under the name *Carter & Associates Financial Consulting*—was already thriving. Word had spread across central Iowa about the young accountant who had taken down a corrupt real estate conglomerate using nothing more than a sharp eye for numbers and absolute fearlessness. Small business owners, family farmers, and independent contractors lined up out the door to hire a woman who knew how to protect her clients from predatory corporate sharks.
A shiny new pickup truck turned down our gravel driveway, kicking up a small cloud of golden dust before coming to a smooth stop near the barn.
My brother, home on leave from the National Guard, hopped out of the driver's side, while my business partner—a brilliant tax attorney named Marcus whom I had met during the federal investigation—stepped out of the passenger seat carrying a stack of corporate expansion portfolios.
"Morning, boss!" Marcus called out with a wide grin, walking toward the porch. "We just finalized the municipal contract for the northern agricultural co-op. Your restructuring plan saved them over four hundred thousand dollars in predatory interest payments."
"That’s fantastic," I smiled, walking down the steps to meet them. "Let’s review the numbers in the kitchen after lunch. Mom is making her famous apple pie."
As Marcus and my brother headed inside, laughing and bantering about the upcoming harvest festival in town, I lingered on the porch for one last moment. I looked down at my left hand. The skin was completely smooth, the small scar from Brad’s wedding band entirely faded away.

I wasn't the terrified farm girl who had walked into the Sterling estate six months ago, hoping to fit into a world that wanted to consume her. I was Megan Carter—survivor, accountant, entrepreneur, and the absolute master of her own destiny.
And out here in the golden fields of Iowa, the harvest was only just beginning.
