Chapter 7 - The Unravelling at the Defense Table

The afternoon session of the federal trial resumed with a crushing blow to the Sterling defense. The prosecution called its star witness—a former junior accountant who had worked inside Arthur Sterling's firm for over a decade before turning state's evidence in exchange for immunity. Under direct questioning, the witness laid out the exact mechanisms of the municipal kickback schemes, pointing directly at Brad as the primary architect who managed the digital ledger entries and signed off on the fraudulent asset seizures.

From my seat in the front row, I watched Brad’s public defender frantically whisper objections that Judge Harrison routinely overruled with sharp, dismissive waves of his hand. The evidence was airtight, unassailable, and backed by thousands of encrypted emails and bank transfers that my own initial digital audit had helped federal investigators unearth months prior.

During a sudden procedural pause requested by the defense to consult with their client, Brad stood up abruptly from the table, his chair scraping loudly against the polished parquet floor. He looked erratic, his chest heaving under his orange jumpsuit as he scanned the packed courtroom. His desperate eyes landed on me once more, and before his lawyer could pull him back down, Brad burst into a frantic, broken outburst.

"Megan! Megan, please!" Brad shouted, his voice cracking against the high vaulted ceiling of the courtroom. "Tell them! Tell them it was a misunderstanding! You know how my father pressured me! You know I didn't mean—"

"Mr. Sterling!" Judge Harrison's voice cracked like a judge's gavel through the room, sharp and thunderous. "One more outburst from you and I will hold you in direct contempt of court and add six months to your federal remand without parole. Sit down and be silent!"

A pair of federal marshals immediately stepped to Brad's sides, their heavy hands resting firmly on their utility belts. Brad collapsed back into his chair, his face buried in his handcuffed hands, his shoulders shaking with silent, humiliated sobs. Patricia Sterling let out a muffled gasp from the gallery behind him, her hands flying to her mouth as she watched her golden-boy son completely disintegrate under the weight of his own crimes.

I didn't blink. I didn't flinch. I simply opened my leather portfolio, pulled out a pristine legal notepad, and jotted down a few notes for Marcus regarding the upcoming afternoon conference with our agricultural cooperative clients in Des Moines. The drama playing out in front of me was no longer my nightmare; it was merely the housekeeping of a ruined household sweeping itself out the door.

When the court adjourned for the day at four o'clock, the media scrum outside the federal building was absolute chaos. Reporters swarmed the marble steps, thrusting microphones toward the defense attorneys who pushed their way through the crowd without offering a single comment. When I stepped out through the heavy glass doors, a half-dozen camera lenses pivoted instantly toward me.

"Mrs. Carter! Mrs. Carter—excuse me, Megan Carter! As the primary financial analyst who assisted the DCI in dismantling the Sterling conglomerate, what are your thoughts on today's proceedings?" a prominent local news anchor called out, stepping directly into my path with a boom microphone.

I paused, looking directly into the lens with calm, unwavering confidence.

"Justice in Iowa has always been about an honest harvest," I said clearly, my voice carrying effortlessly over the hum of the city traffic. "You reap what you sow. If you plant corruption, deceit, and abuse, you harvest federal indictments and ruin. Today is simply proof that the rule of law applies equally to everyone, no matter how grand their family name used to be."

Without another word, I stepped around the reporter, slipped into my waiting black SUV driven by my brother, and watched the courthouse fade into the rearview mirror as we headed back down the highway toward the golden, safe expanse of Carter Acres.
