Chapter 25 - The Return to the Ruins

The iron gates of the suburban estate stood wide open, rusted hinges groaning in the autumn wind as a lone black town car rolled slowly up the cracked asphalt driveway. I sat in the back, looking out the tinted window at the sprawling lawn where, just a few weeks ago, white wedding tents had been erected, filled with laughing guests, flowing champagne, and a family that had traded my life for a weekend of superficial pageantry. The house itself looked hollow, its windows dark and lifeless, devoid of the frantic energy that had once filled its halls. The driver shifted into park, and I stepped out, my cane clicking rhythmically against the stone walkway—not out of necessity, but as a deliberate punctuation mark of power. I walked up the front steps, pausing at the heavy oak double doors where a bright orange foreclosure notice was plastered securely over the polished brass knocker. I didn't feel a shred of nostalgia. I didn't feel any lingering attachment to the place where I had grown up under the suffocating thumb of a father who valued status above all human decency. I reached into my coat pocket, pulled out a small set of master keys provided by Miriam’s firm, and slid the brass key into the deadbolt. With a single, fluid twist, the lock gave way, yielding to its new and rightful owner. The interior was freezing, smelling of dust and abandoned dreams, but as I stood in the grand foyer and looked up at the sweeping staircase, I knew this was no longer a monument to their betrayal. It was simply my latest acquisition.
