Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

"That is a lie!" my father roared, his face purple with rage, veins bulging at his temples. He lunged toward the table to snatch the folder, but Julian Sterling’s hand shot out, grabbing my father’s wrist in a grip of iron.

Julian was not just a handsome groom; he was the heir to a multi-billion-dollar real estate empire, and his family didn't reach that level by being fools. He looked at my father with eyes as cold as arctic ice.

"Let her speak, Richard," Julian said, his voice dangerously low.

My father froze, his chest heaving. He yanked his arm back, glaring daggers at me. "She’s a vindictive, ungrateful liar! We raised her, we supported her—"

"You liquidated my home," I cut him off, my voice unwavering as I stepped closer to the edge of the table. I opened the folder, pulling out the first document. "Here is the deed transfer. Notice the electronic timestamp: Tuesday, 10:14 AM. Exactly one hour after my surgeon made the first incision in my spine. Here is the hospital admission log proving I was under general anesthesia during that exact window."

I pulled out the next paper, letting it float onto the table.

"Here is the emergency wire transfer log showing the $425,000 proceeds from my condo sale being funneled directly into a joint account controlled by Richard and Margaret Vance. And here," I paused, looking directly at Sophie, whose face was now completely drained of color, "is the invoice from the Bellamy Estate proving that the eighty-thousand-dollar balance for this very reception was paid using those exact stolen funds."

Sophie burst into tears, covering her face with her hands. "Julian! You can't believe her! She's making it all up! She’s always hated me!"

Julian didn't look at Sophie. He was staring down at the documents spread across the white silk tablecloth. As a man who grew up in the high-stakes world of commercial real estate, it took him less than ten seconds to recognize the undeniable paper trail of mortgage fraud.

He slowly lifted his head, looking at my father, then at my mother, and finally at Sophie.

"Is this true?" Julian asked, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Did you steal her home to pay for our wedding?"

"No! It was just a temporary—" my mother stammered, wringing her hands so hard her knuckles turned white.

"Don't lie to me," Julian snapped, the aristocratic charm completely stripped away, revealing the ruthless corporate shark beneath. He turned to his own father, Jonathan Sterling, who was standing a few feet away, watching the scene with folded arms and an expression of profound disgust.

Jonathan stepped forward. The billionaire patriarch of the Sterling dynasty looked at my father with utter contempt.

"Richard," Jonathan said, his voice smooth as gravel. "When we agreed to co-host this wedding, your financial advisor assured me that your family’s contribution was backed by liquid investment capital and independent assets."

"Jonathan, please, we can explain—" my father begged, his voice cracking, all the arrogance completely drained from him.

"You can explain it to a federal judge," Jonathan interrupted coldly. He turned to the wedding planner standing near the kitchen doors. "Cancel the catering. Shut down the bar. Tell the staff to pack up. The Bellamy Estate does not host events funded by stolen property."

"No! You can't do this!" Sophie screamed, dropping to her knees in front of Julian, clutching the hem of her designer wedding dress. "Julian, please! We love each other! You can't cancel the wedding over a stupid house!"

Julian looked down at her, his expression devoid of any warmth or pity. "Sophie, my family’s name is worth more than a two-hundred-thousand-party. And frankly? If your parents are willing to commit felony fraud against their own disabled daughter while she’s on an operating table... I shudder to think what they’d do to me once we were married."

He gently, firmly pulled the engagement ring off her finger, dropped it onto the white tablecloth, and turned his back on her.

"The wedding is off," Julian said to the stunned crowd of guests. "Goodnight, everyone."
