Chapter 29 - The Final Departure

The red taillights of the battered rental car disappeared around the bend of the tree-lined driveway, cutting through the gathering dusk like two bleeding wounds in the darkening landscape. I stood on the front porch, watching them vanish into the distance, feeling neither joy nor sorrow—only a profound, beautiful emptiness. My phone buzzed in my hand. It was Miriam, confirming that the last of the escrow funds from the secondary properties had successfully cleared into my primary account, and that the corporate restructuring was 100% complete. I turned around, walking back into the quiet, empty expanse of the house that had once been my prison. The titanium rods along my spine warmed against my skin, a permanent monument to my survival, my resilience, and my absolute refusal to be broken by the people who were supposed to protect me. I walked over to the grand fireplace in the living room, struck a match, and dropped it onto a small pile of kindling, watching the flames catch and dance upward, casting a warm, amber glow across the bare walls. I had taken back everything they stole, and so much more. The empire was mine. The future was mine. And the past was nothing more than ash.
