Chapter 27 - Evelyn’s Collapse and the Ultimate Reality Check

Evelyn stumbled through the doorway behind Arthur, her hair disheveled, her designer sunglasses missing, her face smeared with mascara from hours of frantic, unbroken crying. She took one look at my calm, composed demeanor, glanced around at the bare walls where family portraits had already been taken down by my liquidation crew, and let out a shrill, hysterical shriek that echoed off the high ceilings. "How could you do this to your own family?" she shrieked, pointing a trembling, unmanicured finger directly at my face. "We raised you! We paid for your education! We gave you a life, and you treat us like criminals just because we sold a piece of property to give your sister her dream day!" I took a slow step forward, the sound of my cane striking the hardwood floor sounding like a ticking clock in the tense, suffocating silence of the room. "You didn't sell a piece of property, Evelyn," I said, my voice dropping an octave, carrying a cold, biting edge that made both of them physically recoil. "You liquidated my asset while I was unconscious under a general anesthetic, recovering from major spinal surgery. You stole from your own daughter while her back was literally held together by titanium rods, betting that I wouldn't survive the operation or that I’d be too weak to fight back." Arthur stepped in, trying to salvage a shred of his crumbling patriarchal authority, puffing out his chest despite his rumpled suit. "We are your family! Blood is thicker than water!" "No," I interrupted, my eyes locking onto his with absolute, freezing contempt. "Blood is just fluid. Contracts, law, and justice are what matter. And right now, legally speaking, you are nothing more than trespassing squatters on my property. You have forty-eight minutes to collect whatever cheap clothes fit into the trunk of that rental car before the county sheriff arrives to escort you off the premises permanently."
