Chapter 11 - The Federal Indictment

By early summer, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia formally handed down a comprehensive fifty-page federal indictment against Mark Vance and Diane Vance.
The charges were staggering:
Wire fraud and interstate financial embezzlement.
Conspiracy to commit insurance fraud.
Aggravated child abuse and severe medical neglect resulting in permanent endangerment.
Obstruction of justice and tampering with federal investigations.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas called me in my secure home office to brief me on the trial timeline.
"Major Vance, with Chloe Miller’s full confession and the physical audit trails, our case is rock-solid," Thomas explained over the secure line. "Their defense attorneys are trying to negotiate plea deals, but given the severity of the child endangerment charges, the judge has made it clear there will be no leniency. They're looking at a minimum of fifteen to twenty years combined."
"Keep me updated on the court dates, Thomas," I replied evenly. "Lily and I will be there for the sentencing if required, but we are moving forward with our lives."
"Understood, Major. You've handled this with extraordinary strength. Enjoy the coast."
I hung up the phone and walked out to the backyard where Lily was busy constructing an elaborate sandcastle fortress near the base of the oak tree, complete with moat and seashell battlements.
"Need any reinforcements, General?" I asked, walking over with a plastic shovel in hand.

Lily beamed up at me, her eyes sparkling. "Yes, Mommy! We need a secret escape tunnel right here!"
"Coming right up," I smiled, dropping to my knees in the warm sand beside her.
