Chapter 12 - A Visitor from the Past

A week before the trial was set to begin, a familiar dark green military sedan pulled into our gravel driveway.

I stepped out onto the porch, my hand instinctively resting near my hip before I recognized the tall, broad-shouldered figure stepping out of the driver's side.

Colonel Marcus Sterling. My former commanding officer during the Blackwood deployment.

"Sterling," I said, a genuine smile breaking across my face as I walked down the steps. "What brings you out to the sticks?"

Sterling grinned, closing the car door and walking forward to offer a crisp, respectful salute, which I returned before pulling him into a firm, brotherly embrace.

"I was in D.C. wrapping up operational debriefs and decided to take the scenic coastal route," Sterling said, looking around approvingly at the sunlit cottage and the crashing surf in the distance. "Heard about what went down, Elena. The whole base was talking about it. You took down a domestic syndicate single-handedly while recovering from a combat zone. Never doubted you for a second."

Just then, the screen door clicked open, and Lily stepped out onto the porch, clutching her stuffed golden retriever. She stopped shyly, looking up at the tall man in civilian clothes.

"Lily, sweetie, come say hello," I called out, gesturing her over. "This is Colonel Sterling. He was Mommy's commander when we were overseas."

Sterling knelt down to eye level, smiling warmly. "So you're Lily. Your mom talked about you every single day she was deployed. Said you were the bravest little girl in the world."

Lily’s shy expression melted into a proud smile. "Did she really?"

"Every single day," Sterling confirmed.

We spent the afternoon grilling burgers on the back deck, sharing stories of old military deployments, ocean tides, and building a brand new life from scratch. Having Sterling there—a piece of my past honor standing shoulder-to-shoulder with my present reality—grounded me in a way I hadn't realized I needed.

Before he left as the sun began to dip below the horizon, Sterling gripped my shoulder firmly. "You're a survivor, Elena. But more than that, you're an exceptional mother. If you ever need anything—anything at all—you call me."

"I know, Marcus. Thank you."
