Chapter 19 - The Anniversary of Freedom

On a crisp October morning—exactly one year to the day since I returned from my covert deployment and walked into Room 412 of the pediatric ICU—Lily and I drove down to our favorite stretch of secluded beach.

The morning air was brisk, painted in shades of pale gold and lavender.

Lily ran ahead, her laughter mingling with the barking of Major as the puppy chased the foaming tide, kicking up sprays of diamond-like saltwater.

I walked slowly behind them, hands in my jacket pockets, breathing in the deep, clean scent of the ocean.

Lily suddenly stopped, turning around and waving frantically for me to hurry up. "Mommy, come on! Look what Major found!"

I quickened my pace, walking across the hard-packed sand until I reached them. Lily was pointing down at a smooth, perfect spiral seashell resting half-buried in the damp sand.

"It's a fighter shell," Lily announced proudly, picking it up and handing it to me. "It's strong, and the ocean couldn't break it."

I took the shell, running my thumb over its smooth, polished surface. I looked down into my daughter's bright, joyful eyes, seeing no trace of the fear that had haunted her a year ago.

"You're right, sweetheart," I murmured, pulling her into a warm, fierce embrace. "It's unbreakable."
