Chapter 16 - The Breach in the Dark

The heavy iron door of the vault shuddered on its rusted hinges as Mateo burst into the dim chamber, his breathing ragged, his jacket torn at the shoulder.

"Mateo! What happened?" Lucía yelled over the howling wind outside, stepping away from the crate as Mrs. Gable clutched the leather journal tightly to her chest.

"Someone’s outside," Mateo said, his eyes darting frantically toward the dark staircase. "Not just a guard. A professional. I spotted a drone hovering near the north turret, and when I tried to track the signal, someone ambushed me in the courtyard. They weren't looking to scare us, Lucía—they were looking for *her*."

Mrs. Gable’s face drained of what little color it had left. She scrambled off the wooden stool with surprising speed, clutching the leather journal out toward Lucía like an offering. "Take it! Take the ledger! If they get their hands on this, the entire foundation of Vanguard Holdings—and every secret my old masters tried to bury—will be wiped clean forever."

"Who’s out there, Mrs. Gable?" Lucía demanded, grabbing the heavy journal and slipping it instantly beneath her trench coat. "Give me a name!"

"I don't know who bought them off," the old woman cried, her voice cracking with panic as heavy footsteps slammed onto the lower stone landing just outside the vault door. "But it’s the same lawyer who drafted the offshore shell companies—Sterling Vance. He’s been working with Julian’s underground syndicate from the very beginning!"

Before Lucía could process the name, the heavy wooden door of the vault was kicked open with a shattering crash.

A tall, broad-shouldered man in a dark tactical jacket stepped into the dim light. In his right hand, he held a sleek, silenced pistol, the barrel gleaming with a deadly, metallic sheen. Behind him, standing calmly in the doorway with a cold, condescending smile adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, was none other than Sterling Vance—the silver-haired shark who had represented Julian in the boardroom showdown months ago.

"Well, well," Vance drawled, stepping into the vault as if he were strolling into a high-end country club. "Family reunions in damp, subterranean ruins. How wonderfully dramatic."

Mateo instantly stepped in front of Lucía, his fists clenching at his sides, his eyes blazing with fury. "Vance. You’re disbarred. Your accounts are frozen. What kind of suicide mission are you running?"

"Not a suicide mission, Mr. Sterling—a cleanup," Vance replied smoothly, gesturing lazily with his hand to the armed operative beside him. "Your brother Julian may be an incompetent fool, but he left behind a very lucrative portfolio. And your little fiancée here has been digging through graves that should have stayed permanently sealed."

Vance’s gaze shifted past Mateo, locking onto Lucía with predatory coldness. "Hand over the journal, Ms. Sterling. Or I promise you, neither of you will walk out of this tower alive."

Lucía’s hand rested flat against the heavy leather book hidden inside her coat. Her heart pounded furiously against her ribs, but her mind was as sharp and cold as surgical steel. She didn't flinch. She didn't back down.

"You think killing us here will save your empire, Vance?" Lucía asked, her voice ringing clear and steady through the damp vault. "Federal marshals are already tracking the encrypted ping from my phone. You have about three minutes before this entire estate is surrounded."

Vance’s confident smile flickered for a fraction of a second. He glanced toward the heavy iron door, then back at Lucía. "A clever bluff. But let’s see how well you negotiate when—"

Before Vance could finish his sentence, the sharp, deafening roar of a police helicopter spotlight sliced through the high gothic windows of the clock tower, bathing the entire vault in blinding, brilliant white light.
