Chapter 7 - The Unraveling of an Empire

The vote wasn't even close.

Within ten minutes, Julian Sterling was stripped of his executive powers, his company-issued phone was deactivated, and his office access card was confiscated by corporate security. As two guards escorted him out of the conference room, Julian stopped right beside Lucía’s chair, his face twisted in a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You think you’ve won," Julian hissed, venom dripping from every syllable. "You think sitting in this chair makes you a Sterling. But you’ll never belong here. The blood on your hands is just as dirty as ours."

Lucía didn't even turn her head to look at him. She calmly opened a golden fountain pen and signed the top document of her new portfolio. "At least my hands are clean of murder, Julian. Escort him out."

The doors clicked shut behind him, sealing his exile.

Silence descended upon the boardroom once again, but this time, the heavy tension had evaporated, replaced by an atmosphere of cautious submission. The board members watched Lucía with newfound respect—and unmistakable fear. She had dismantled a thirty-year dynasty in less than forty-eight hours, not with brute force, but with patience, strategy, and unyielding precision.

"Well handled, my dear," Victor murmured from his seat beside her, offering a subtle, approving nod. "Your father would have been proud. He always said a true leader doesn't need to shout to be heard."

"My father was murdered by his own wife’s silence," Lucía replied quietly, her eyes resting on the city skyline outside the glass. "I’m just finishing the audit he never got to write."

As the board meeting adjourned and the members slowly filed out of the room, Lucía remained seated. The adrenaline that had sustained her through the wedding scandal, the confrontation, and the boardroom coup was finally beginning to ebb, leaving a hollow ache in her chest.

She pulled out her phone. There were dozens of missed calls and frantic text messages from reporters, society columnists, and distant relatives crawling out of the woodwork. But one name caught her eye.

Mateo.

He hadn't called since last night. Just a single text message sent at 3:15 AM: I’m sorry for everything. I need time to breathe.

Lucía stared at the screen for a long time, her thumb hovering over his contact card. Part of her wanted to call him, to explain that she never meant to break his world quite so violently. But another, larger part of her knew that some bridges had to burn so she could finally walk forward without looking back.
