Chapter 20 - The Final Chess Move

The rain was lashing heavily against the floor-to-ceiling windows of our living room the next afternoon when Sarah arrived. She shook out her umbrella, stepping inside with her signature bright, cheerful smile that now made my stomach churn with nausea.

"Nora, sweetie! I brought those asset protection drafts you asked for," Sarah said, holding up a sleek leather portfolio as she walked toward the kitchen island. "With David’s mess, we need to make sure Ruth’s trust fund is ironclad."

I stood at the kitchen island, pouring two cups of hot chamomile tea. My hands were completely steady. "Thank you, Sarah. You’ve been such an incredible friend through all of this. I don't know what I would do without you."

"Oh, nonsense, that's what best friends are for," Sarah purred, opening the leather portfolio and laying out a stack of crisp legal documents across the marble counter. She slid a pen toward me. "Just sign right here on the highlighted lines. This ensures complete legal protection for Ruth’s future."

I looked down at the paper. Right there, hidden in the dense legal jargon of the second page, was a malicious rider transferring primary guardianship and custody rights directly to the Vance Family Trust—overseen by Evelyn Vance.

I picked up the pen. Sarah’s eyes glittered with greedy, triumphant anticipation. She leaned in closer, holding her breath.

Just as the tip of my pen touched the paper, the front doors of the mansion blew wide open with a resounding crash.

Heavy footsteps echoed across the hardwood foyer. Before Sarah could turn around, Marcus stepped into the kitchen, flanked by two armed federal marshals and Adam, whose face was a mask of thunderous fury.

Sarah’s face drained of all color, the smile shattering completely. She dropped the pen, stumbling back against the kitchen counter. "What... what is the meaning of this?!" she stammered, her voice cracking with panic.

Adam walked up to the island, his eyes locked onto Sarah with a look of pure, unadulterated disgust. He reached down, picked up the legal document, and ripped it cleanly in half right in front of her face.

"The game is over, Sarah," Adam said, his voice deadly quiet. "We heard the recording from the prison visiting room. We know about you and Evelyn."

Sarah gasped, her knees buckling slightly as the federal marshals stepped forward, their heavy steel cuffs gleaming coldly under the kitchen lights.

"Sarah Jenkins," the lead marshal stated, grabbing her arm firmly. "You are under arrest for conspiracy, wire fraud, and attempted child abduction on behalf of a convicted felon."

As they dragged a screaming, thrashing Sarah out through the front doors, I walked over to the window, watching the police cruisers vanish into the stormy night.

The house was quiet again. Adam walked up behind me, wrapping his arms securely around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder.

"Is it really over this time?" Adam whispered against my hair.

I looked out at the dark horizon where the storm clouds were finally beginning to part, letting a single, brilliant ray of moonlight break through onto the garden below.

I reached out, gently touching the protective glass case holding the little yellow blanket.

"Not quite yet," I whispered, a faint, dangerous smile touching my lips as my phone buzzed with one final, encrypted text message from an unknown number inside the prison. "She hasn't realized yet... that I left her a parting gift of my own."
