Chapter 24 - The Nursery Secret

My blood ran cold. "The nursery?"

"Why do you think Evelyn was so obsessed with naming your unborn daughter after her?" Julian asked, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, his eyes locking onto mine. "It wasn't just about ego or tradition. Under the original 1920 Vance family trust charter, the primary beneficiary must be a direct female descendant bearing a specific generational name—or, failing that, a chosen guardian who holds the physical seal. That yellow blanket you've been protecting like a relic? It isn't just a sentimental piece of fabric. It’s the cryptographic key."

Before I could process the staggering weight of his words, heavy, hurried footsteps echoed down the upstairs hallway. The bedroom door slammed open.

"Elena?" Adam’s voice rang out, laced with panic and sleep-deprived confusion. "Elena, where are you?!"

I turned back toward the library doors, but in the blink of an eye, Julian had vanished into the shadows near the tall French windows that led out to the private garden. The glass door clicked shut, the night wind fluttering the heavy velvet drapes.

"Elena!" Adam burst into the library, his chest heaving, his eyes wide with terror as he spotted me standing alone in the center of the room, staring at the open ledger. He rushed over, grabbing my shoulders, his hands shaking. "What are you doing down here? Are you crazy? What if someone—"

"Adam," I interrupted, my voice trembling as I looked up into his worried face. "Your mother wasn't just a fraudster. She was hiding something much bigger. And someone else is already here looking for it."

Adam frowned, looking down at the heavy ledger open on the desk. He recognized the book instantly—it was the original family registry that had been missing from the corporate vault for twenty years. His expression darkened, a mixture of betrayal and profound dread washing over him. "Who let you into this room?"

"Not Sarah," I whispered, gripping his forearm. "Your cousin. Julian Vance-Cross."

Adam staggered back as if he had been physically struck, the color draining completely from his face. "That’s impossible," he choked out, staring blindly at the wall. "Julian died in a fire in Switzerland when we were children. Evelyn... Evelyn planned his memorial service herself."
