Chapter 23 - The Shadow in the Library

"I wouldn't touch that if I were you, Mrs. Vance," a smooth, cultured voice cut through the heavy silence of the library.

The figure slowly turned around in the chair, pulling down the dark wool hood. It wasn't Sarah. It wasn't one of Evelyn’s lawyers. It was a man I had never seen before—tall, with sharp, aristocratic features, piercing green eyes, and a quiet, terrifying confidence that radiated off him like static electricity. He closed the heavy leather ledger with a soft *thud*.

"Who are you? How did you get in here?" I demanded, keeping my voice low but sharp, my hand sliding into my cardigan pocket to grip my phone, ready to dial emergency services.

The man stood up, buttoning his tailored suit jacket with deliberate slowness. He didn't look like a common burglar; he looked like a predator who owned the room he was standing in. "My name is Julian Vance-Cross. Evelyn’s estranged nephew. Or, more accurately, the man your late mother-in-law tried to erase from the family tree thirty years ago."

I froze, my thumb hovering over the screen of my phone. "Evelyn didn't have any siblings. Adam told me—"

"Adam knows only what Evelyn wanted him to know," Julian interrupted, walking slowly toward me across the room, his footsteps completely silent on the carpet. "Evelyn was a master of reinvention. When my father died under... mysterious circumstances, she seized control of the entire Vance shipping empire, forged the corporate charters, and buried our branch of the family beneath a mountain of fabricated debts."

He stopped a few feet away from me, his green eyes scanning my face with an intense, analytical curiosity. "And you... you are the variable she never anticipated. The working-class girl who survived a fall down the stairs, exposed Sarah’s fraud, and inadvertently cracked open a vault of secrets that spans three decades."

"If you're here to reclaim the estate," I said, lifting my chin defiantly, "you're too late. The federal government is seizing everything to pay back the victims."

Julian let out a low, humorless chuckle. "The federal government sees only what is on the surface, Mrs. Vance. But what lies beneath—the offshore accounts, the black-market antiquities, the real leverage—is still very much intact. And Evelyn left the access codes to the true heart of the empire... hidden inside the nursery."
