Chapter 25 - The Ghost from the Alps

The morning sun broke over the jagged coastline, casting long, golden fingers across the breakfast room table, but the atmosphere inside the house was as cold as a tomb. Adam sat across from me, staring into a cup of untouched black coffee, his mind racing through the labyrinth of lies his mother had constructed over the course of his entire life.
"I called our family attorney and ran a background check through some federal contacts I still have," Adam said, his voice raw and exhausted. "Julian Vance-Cross is very much alive. He survived the fire in Switzerland thirty years ago, but Evelyn had him institutionalized in a private European clinic under an alias to keep him from claiming his share of the shipping empire."
"And now he’s out," I added softly, resting my hand over my swollen belly. "He knows about the trust, Adam. He knows about the yellow blanket."
Adam slammed his fist onto the mahogany table, the china rattling violently. "It doesn't matter what he knows or what my mother planned. That blanket is locked away in the bank vault downtown. Nobody can touch it, and nobody can take our daughter’s future away from us."
My phone vibrated on the table. It wasn't a standard notification; it was an encrypted video feed prompt from an unknown, untraceable server.
With shaking fingers, I hit play.
The screen flickered to life, showing the interior of the downtown bank vault—our private safety deposit box room. The steel door was swung wide open. Standing in front of the empty, ransacked box was Julian, holding up the old, frayed yellow blanket toward the camera lens with a slow, chilling smile.
"Checking your assets, brother?" Julian’s voice purred smoothly through the phone’s tiny speaker. "Item secured. If you want to see your precious family heirloom again—and perhaps learn the truth about how your mother really built this empire—meet me at the abandoned lighthouse on Cliff Point tonight at midnight. Come alone, Adam. No police, no federal marshals. Otherwise, the blanket—and the cryptographic keys hidden inside its seams—goes straight into the ocean."
