Chapter 10 - THE PAPER TRAIL TO BEATRICE

The violation of the protective order meant the county prosecutor didn't hesitate. By eight o'clock that evening, Celeste had been picked up at her apartment and booked for breach of a domestic violence injunction. Because she had breached the terms of her original pre-trial release, her bail was revoked entirely.

The next morning, David Vance arrived at my home holding two cardboard bankers boxes.

"Celeste’s arrest triggered a chain reaction," David said, setting the heavy boxes on my kitchen table. "When the police executed the warrant on her phone last night, they recovered deleted voice memos between her and Beatrice recorded during your pregnancy."

I poured two cups of black coffee, handed one to David, and sat down across from him. "What kind of voice memos?"

"The smoking gun," David replied, pulling out a plastic evidence bag containing a thumb drive. "Beatrice wasn't just planning to take Leo. She was actively trying to sabotage your military clearance before you even gave birth."

My blood ran cold. "How?"

"She submitted three separate anonymous tips to your command's Inspector General office back in January," David explained, pulling a sheaf of printed emails from the box. "She claimed you were suffering from unmedicated severe depression, that you were taking unauthorized leaves of absence, and that you were financially incompetent. She was trying to get your security clearance suspended so you would be forced out of the military on an administrative discharge."

I stared at the black print on the pages. My mind reeled back to January—a time when I had been five months pregnant, working late into the night at the logistics command center, struggling with morning sickness, yet maintaining a flawless performance record. I remembered my unit commander calling me in for an unexpected 'routine review' of my security dossier. I had passed with flying colors, but I had wondered at the time why the review had been initiated.

"She was laying the groundwork," I whispered, the sheer depth of my mother's malice sending a chill down my spine. "If I lost my clearance, I’d lose my job. If I lost my job, I’d lose my housing. And when the baby arrived, she could step in as the benevolent grandmother offering a 'stable home' with Celeste."

"Exactly," David said, his jaw tight. "It was a systematic attempt to destroy your livelihood so you’d have no leverage to resist them. But Beatrice made a massive mistake."

"What mistake?"

"She used her personal home IP address to submit two of the electronic IG complaints," David said with a cold, ruthless grin. "The federal prosecutors just added federal obstruction of military operations and filing false official statements to her indictment stack. The judge in her case just revoked her house arrest. As of two hours ago, Beatrice is sitting in a county jail cell awaiting trial."

I looked out the kitchen window at the autumn leaves fluttering down onto the lawn. For years, Beatrice had operated like a master puppeteer, hiding behind polite social maneuvers and indirect threats while keeping her hands clean.

Now, her own obsession with control had finally dragged her out into the harsh light of a court of law.
