Chapter 19 - THE UNBROKEN THREAD

That evening, after the last guest had left and the birthday decorations had been packed away, I carried a sleepy, chocolate-smudged Leo up to his bedroom.

I gave him a warm bath, put him into his favorite star-patterned pajamas, and tucked him into his toddler bed under the soft glow of a nightlight that projected blue stars onto the ceiling.

I sat in the rocking chair beside his bed, holding his tiny hand as his eyes grew heavy.

"Momma?" he whispered, his voice thick with sleep.

"Yes, baby?"

"Are we safe?"

The question was innocent, born of a toddler’s simple curiosity about the dark room, but it echoed deep in my chest.

I squeezed his tiny fingers gently, leaning down to kiss his forehead.

"We are totally, completely safe, sweet boy," I whispered. "Always and forever."

He let out a long, contented sigh, his breathing slowing into the steady, peaceful rhythm of deep sleep.

I sat in the quiet dark for a long time, watching the blue stars drift slowly across the ceiling. I thought about the journey that had brought us to this room: the emergency C-section, the cold threats in the hospital ward, the forged legal papers, the frozen bank accounts, the courtrooms, and the long road to justice.

Every battle had been worth it. Every tear, every sleepless night, every difficult choice had led directly to this moment of absolute, undisturbed peace.
