Chapter 15 - THE LAST LESSON

I sat at the kitchen island for an hour, holding my father's handwritten letters, feeling a quiet tears trail down my cheeks.
They weren't tears of grief for Beatrice or Celeste. They were tears of profound relief for seven-year-old Mara—the little girl who had spent her entire childhood believing she was second-best, unloved by her father, and indebted to a mother who claimed to sacrifice everything for her.
The lies were completely gone now. The curtain had been pulled back entirely, leaving nothing behind but the absolute, undeniable truth. My father had loved me. He had fought for me. He had tried to protect me.
"Momma?"
A small, soft voice called out from the living room rug. I wiped my face, set the letters down, and walked over to the play area.
Leo had managed to stand up completely unassisted, balancing on his sturdy little legs, clutching a soft blue blanket in one hand. He looked up at me with bright, brown eyes that looked uncannily like the photos of my father I had just pulled from that old cardboard box.
"Look at you, big guy," I whispered, kneeling down on the carpet and opening my arms wide.
Leo took three steady, deliberate steps across the rug, laughing as he fell forward right into my lap. I pulled him close, holding him against my chest, feeling his warm, steady heartbeat against mine.
"I promise you, Leo," I murmured against his soft curls, "you will never have to earn my love. You will never have to fight for your place in this world. Everything your grandfather tried to give me, I am giving to you tenfold."

I picked him up, carried him to the kitchen, and carefully placed my father's letters inside a safe fireproof box in my master closet alongside Leo's birth certificate and my military discharge papers.
The past could no longer hurt me. Its secrets had been unearthed, its debts had been collected, and its ghosts had finally been laid to rest.
