Chapter 12 - THE TESTIMONY

"State your name and occupation for the record," the prosecutor directed softly.

"Mara Bennett. Logistics Specialist, United States Armed Forces," I answered, my voice carrying clearly through the high-ceilinged courtroom, echoing off the mahogany walls.

I sat in the witness stand, three feet away from the judge’s bench. Directly across from me sat Beatrice and Celeste, flanked by their court-appointed public defenders. Gregory had already entered his guilty plea earlier that morning in a separate proceeding, agreeing to serve forty-eight months in exchange for testifying against Beatrice as the mastermind.

The prosecutor nodded. "Specialist Bennett, please describe for the court your relationship with the defendant, Beatrice Bennett, during the period of your pregnancy."

I took a slow, measured breath. I spoke clearly, detailing every milestone of the conspiracy with clinical precision. I recounted the three-year history of wire transfers totaling $42,500. I produced the forged medical invoices from the non-existent Westbridge Fertility Center. I detailed the visit to the hospital ward seventy-two hours after my C-section, reading directly from the hospital security log notes that documented their unauthorized intrusion.

When I reached the part of my statement regarding the forged custody paperwork, Beatrice’s defense attorney stood up.

"Objection, Your Honor," the attorney interjected. "The witness is speculating on the intent behind the legal filings drafted by third parties."

The judge, a stern woman in her sixties with sharp gray eyes, leaned over the bench. "Overruled. The witness is detailing the physical presentation of fraudulent documents delivered to her hospital room. Proceed, Specialist Bennett."

I looked directly at Beatrice.

"They didn't come to support me," I said, my voice steady and unwavering. "They didn't come to celebrate the birth of my son. They arrived with pre-filed legal documents, backed by forged signatures and threats against my military career, attempting to leverage my physical vulnerability following major surgery to strip me of my parental rights."

I turned back to the judge.

"They treated my son like an asset to be assigned, and they treated my military service like a weakness to be exploited. I ask this court to enforce the maximum penalty available under federal law to ensure that my son, Leo, is permanently protected from their reckless, unlawful actions."

The silence in the courtroom was absolute. Celeste was weeping quietly into her hands at the defense table. Beatrice sat frozen, staring straight ahead, her face pale and hollow.

"Thank you, Specialist Bennett," the judge said softly. "You may step down."

I stood up, smoothed my uniform jacket, and walked down the center aisle of the courtroom with my head held high.
