Chapter 12 - The Cracks in the Empire

The news of our legal counterstrike hit the Miller family like an artillery shell.
By Thursday afternoon, process servers formally served Gerald, Ruth, Jenna, and the private investigation agency with civil lawsuits and temporary restraining orders.
The legal documents were delivered directly to Gerald’s office at Miller Commercial Holdings and to the Miller family residence.
That night, the cracks in the Miller empire began to widen rapidly.
Without Robert to maintain the complex network systems, Miller Commercial Holdings suffered a major system crash during peak trading hours. Client data was temporarily corrupted, and several high-net-worth investors were unable to complete time-sensitive real estate transactions.
Furthermore, news of the lawsuit began to leak through the local high-society grapevine. While we had kept the specific medical details private in the legal filings—referring broadly to "unauthorized genetic testing of a minor"—the fact that Robert had severed all ties with his family and sued his own parents sent shockwaves through Oak Creek.
In elite social circles, reputation was everything. Ruth Miller, who had spent decades cultivating the image of the perfect, refined matriarch, suddenly found herself the topic of whispered gossip at the local country club.
At 8:00 PM, my phone rang from an unknown number. I answered cautiously.
"Clara... please don't hang up," a voice begged.
It was Jenna.
Her voice was entirely devoid of the smug, malicious triumph she had displayed at the dinner table. She sounded frantic, breathless, and terrified.
"Jenna," I said coldly. "You're violating a restraining order by calling this number."
"Clara, please! You have to talk to Robert!" Jenna sobbed into the phone. "Dad is completely out of his mind! He’s screaming at everyone! He threatened to cut me off, sell my car, and kick me out of the house because the lawsuit names me as the primary defendant!"
I stood in my kitchen, listening to the girl who had tried to destroy my life and break my daughter's heart just five days ago.
"You brought this on yourself, Jenna," I said, my voice as hard as diamond. "You spent thousands of dollars to orchestrate a public execution at a dinner table. You targeted a seven-year-old child."
"I thought you were cheating!" Jenna shrieked defensiveness through her tears. "I thought I was saving my brother! I didn't know about his... his medical problem! How was I supposed to know?!"
"It was none of your business!" I snapped. "You didn't care about Robert. You wanted to destroy me because you’ve always hated that Robert loved me more than he tolerated your toxic family! You wanted a scandal, Jenna. Well, now you have one."
"Clara, please, tell him to drop the lawsuit! The legal fees are going to ruin me! Dad says he won't pay for my defense lawyer!"
"Actions have consequences, Jenna," I said softly into the receiver. "Welcome to the real world."

I hung up the phone and immediately forwarded the call log to David Vance to document the restraining order violation.
I looked out the kitchen window into the dark backyard. The war was far from over, but for the first time in my life, I felt completely in control. They had tried to tear my family apart, but all they had managed to do was burn down their own castle.
