Chapter 17 - The Fall of Gerald Miller

I watched Gerald’s face from across the table.

First came confusion. Then denial. Then, as his eyes locked onto Ruth’s handwriting and the official stamps of the London fertility clinic, a look of utter, soul-crushing devastation spread across his features.

His skin turned an ashen, ghostly gray. The paper in his hands began to rattle loudly as his body shuddered.

"No..." Gerald whispered, his voice cracking into a frail, pathetic gasp. "No... this is fake. This is a forgery."

"It's not a forgery, Dad," Robert said, his tone devoid of cruelty, filled only with a heavy, sorrowful truth. "Mom sent it to me two days ago from Chicago. She’s been hiding it from you since 1988."

Jenna leaned over to look at the papers. As she realized what the documents meant, she let out a horrified gasp, covering her mouth with both hands. "Mom... Mom lied to us?"

"She lied to all of us," Robert said quietly. "You spent your whole life judging people based on their bloodline, Gerald. You treated Clara like garbage because she didn't come from 'elite stock.' You turned your back on a seven-year-old child because she didn't carry your DNA."

Gerald sat frozen, staring blankly at the paper. Tears slowly filled his hollow eyes, spilling over his weathered cheeks. His entire identity—his pride, his family legacy, his arrogance—had just been obliterated in a single instant.

"I am not your biological son," Robert continued softly. "Mia is not your biological granddaughter. But I loved you as a father for thirty-five years. And Mia loved you as a grandfather. You had a family that loved you unconditionally, Gerald. But you threw it all away for a piece of paper."

Gerald buried his face in his trembling hands, letting out a broken, silent sob that shook his entire frame.

His lawyer looked down at the documents, then at Robert, realizing that the legal battle was over. There was nothing left to fight for. The empire had collapsed from within.

"We are withdrawing the lawsuit against Jenna and the agency," Robert said, standing up from his chair. "And you will dismiss all claims against me and Vanguard Solutions."

Gerald didn't answer. He couldn't. He was a broken man sitting amidst the ruins of his own creation.

"Goodbye, Gerald," Robert said softly.

He reached out, took my hand, and together, we walked out of the conference room, leaving the shadows of the Miller family behind forever.
