Chapter 7 - The Aftermath in the Car

Robert walked into the foyer, his eyes meeting mine. The anger in his expression instantly melted away, replaced by a profound, agonizing sorrow when he saw Mia hiding her face against my neck, her small shoulders shivering with quiet sobs.

"Key," I whispered, my own voice shaking.

Robert reached into his pocket, pulled out the key fob, and unlocked the SUV outside. He opened the front door of the mansion for us, blocking the doorway with his body so his parents couldn't follow us out.

"Robert! Wait! Please!" Ruth’s desperate cries echoed behind us from the hallway, but Robert slammed the heavy oak door shut, cutting off her voice.

The cold night air hit us as we hurried down the driveway. Robert opened the rear door of the SUV, and I carefully placed Mia into her child seat. She was still crying softly, refusing to let go of my shirt.

"Daddy's here, sweetie," Robert said, stepping in beside me. He leaned over the car seat, wrapping his large arms around Mia, pulling both of us close. "Daddy's right here. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again. I promise you. I promise."

Mia looked up at him through tear-stained eyes, her lower lip trembling. "Are... are you still my daddy?"

The question tore through the air like a knife.

Robert gasped, a sudden sob escaping his throat. Tears spilled over his eyes, tracking down his cheeks. He took Mia’s small hands in his and pressed them against his face.

"Yes, Mia. Yes! I am your daddy," Robert sobbed out, his voice raw with devotion. "I am the man who held you the second you were born. I am the man who reads you stories every single night. I am your daddy today, tomorrow, and forever. Nothing in this world—no paper, no mean words, nothing—will ever change that. Do you hear me?"

Mia looked at his crying face, sensing the absolute truth in his words. She reached out her tiny hands and wiped a tear from his cheek. "Okay, Daddy."

I buckled her in securely, kissed her forehead, and closed the door. I walked around to the passenger side, while Robert got into the driver's seat.

He started the engine, shifted into drive, and tore down the gravel driveway, leaving the Miller mansion behind in the dark.

For the first ten minutes of the drive, nobody spoke. The only sound was the quiet hum of the heater and Mia’s breathing in the back seat as she gradually succumbed to exhaustion, her little head slumping sideways as she fell asleep from emotional overload.

Once we were sure Mia was asleep, I reached over and grabbed Robert’s hand. He was gripping the steering wheel so hard his knuckles were red.

"You were incredible in there," I whispered, tears finally streaming down my own face. "I'm so sorry, Rob. I'm so sorry you had to say those things to them."

Robert shook his head, staring straight ahead at the dark highway. "Don't apologize, Clara. Don't you dare apologize. You carried that burden for eight years to protect my dignity. And they... they weaponized it against an innocent seven-year-old child."

He squeezed my hand back, his jaw tight.

"They think this is over," Robert said, his tone turning icy cold. "They think they just had a dramatic family argument. But they have no idea what they've just unleashed."
