Chapter 13 - The New Beginning

Two weeks passed.
The immediate storm had settled into a steady, controlled legal battle. With the restraining orders firmly in place, the constant harassment stopped. For the first time in years, our home felt truly peaceful.
Mia was recovering remarkably well. Guided by Dr. Sarah, our child psychologist, we had open, gentle conversations about family, love, and genetics. Mia quickly realized that nothing fundamental had changed in her world. Her daddy still made her blueberry pancakes on Saturday mornings, still helped her with her homework, and still sang her to sleep when she had bad dreams.
One evening, as Robert was tucking her into bed, Mia looked up at him with bright, curious eyes.
"Daddy?"
"Yes, sweetie?"
"Is it okay that I don't have your blood?" she asked innocently.
Robert smiled, leaning down to press his forehead against hers. "Mia, blood just makes you related. Love, kindness, and being there every day—that’s what makes you family. You have my heart, and that’s a thousand times stronger than blood."
Mia grinned, satisfied with his answer, and pulled her comforter up to her chin. "I love your heart, Daddy."
"I love yours too, baby," Robert whispered.
Downstairs, Robert and I sat at the dining room table surrounded by blueprints, business plans, and legal incorporation documents.
While Gerald’s firm was bleeding clients and struggling to keep its legacy systems operational, Robert had officially taken the leap. He registered his new independent firm: Vanguard Technology & Real Estate Solutions.
With the backing of Vance Logistics and Apex Holdings—two of the largest commercial clients in the region—Robert had secured immediate startup capital and a guaranteed client portfolio.
"I should have done this five years ago," Robert said, signing his name on the final incorporation document. "I stayed at my father's firm out of a misguided sense of obligation. I thought if I worked hard enough, he would finally respect me as an equal."
"He never knew how to value you, Rob," I said, putting my arms around his neck from behind. "He only knew how to control you."
"Well, he can't control me anymore," Robert said, looking up at me with a light in his eyes I hadn't seen in years. "We're free, Clara. Truly free."
Just then, Robert’s email chime went off on his laptop. He clicked on the notification.
It was a formal communication from his father's lead defense attorney.
The subject line read: Settlement Offer & Terms of Reconciliation.
Robert clicked the email open. As he read through the text, his smile slowly vanished, replaced by a dark, incredulous glare.
"What is it?" I asked.
"My father," Robert said, his voice dripping with disgust. "He’s offering to settle the lawsuit, grant me full equity ownership of Miller Commercial Holdings, and double my previous salary... on one condition."

"What condition?"
Robert looked at me, his eyes burning. "That we agree to conduct a private, secondary paternity test on Mia using his court-appointed lab... 'just to be 100% certain'."
